Quick Understanding

İngilizcede bazı isimler her zaman çoğul biçimde kullanılır ve her zaman çoğul fiil alır — tekil biçimleri yoktur (ya da tekil biçimleri farklı bir anlama gelir). Bunlar genelde iki parçadan oluşan giysi/aletler (trousers, scissors, glasses) ve toplu isimlerdir (police, people, cattle).

Tek bir tane belirtmek için: a pair of + çoğul isim (a pair of trousers, a pair of glasses)

  • My glasses are on the table.Gözlüğüm masanın üstünde.
  • I need a pair of scissors.Bir makasa ihtiyacım var.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • İki parçadan oluşan giysi/aletler: trousers, jeans, shorts, pyjamas, glasses, scissors, pliers, binoculars — hep çoğul fiil alır.
  • Tek bir taneden bahsetmek için: "a pair of" kullanılır — I need a pair of scissors.
  • Her zaman çoğul davranan toplu isimler: police, people, cattle — tekil formları farklı bir kelimedir ya da yoktur (a police officer, a person, a cow).
  • -ics ile biten isimler bağlama göre değişir: news her zaman tekil (The news IS good), physics/economics genelde tekil (ders adı), ama "the statistics show..." gibi kullanımda çoğul olabilir.

When DON'T we use it?

Bu isimlerin sonuna sayı eklemeye çalışıp "two trousers" gibi çoğulun çoğulunu YAPMA — onlar zaten çoğul, sayı belirtmek için "pair" kullanılır.
❌ I bought two scissors. → ✅ I bought two pairs of scissors.
"police" kelimesini tekil fiil ile KULLANMA: ❌ The police is coming. → ✅ The police are coming.

Short Answers

Bu isimler her zaman çoğul fiille sorulup cevaplanır: "Are your trousers new?" → "Yes, they are." Not: "it is" değil, her zaman "they are" kullanılır çünkü isim çoğul kabul edilir.

Common Mistakes

❌ My trouser is dirty.
✅ My trousers are dirty.
WHY? "trousers" her zaman çoğul kullanılır ve çoğul fiil (are) alır — Türkçedeki tekil "pantolonum" ifadesinin etkisiyle tekil yapılmamalı.
❌ I need a scissors.
✅ I need a pair of scissors.
WHY? "scissors" zaten çoğul biçimdedir, önüne doğrudan "a" konulamaz — tek bir taneyi belirtmek için "a pair of" kullanılır.
❌ The police is here.
✅ The police are here.
WHY? "police" toplu bir isim olarak her zaman çoğul fiil alır; tek bir polis memuru için "a police officer" denir.
