Quick Understanding

Concession connectors (zıtlık bağlaçları), beklenenin AKSİNE gerçekleşen bir durumu anlatmak için kullanılır: “X olmasına rağmen Y oldu”. Bu ailede iki farklı gramer grubu vardır — although / though / even though bir cümlecik (özne+fiil) alır, despite / in spite of ise bir isim ya da -ing alır.

“despite” tek başına bir edattır, “of” almaz; “in spite of” ifadesinde “of” zaten vardır — ikisine birden “of” eklenmez.

Word Order

Bu bağlaçların hepsi cümlenin başında (virgülle) veya sonunda (virgülsüz, though hariç) kullanılabilir. “though” cümle SONUNDA tek başına bir zarf gibi de kullanılabilir.

  • Even though she studied hard, she failed the exam.Sıkı çalışmasına rağmen sınavda kaldı. (başta — virgüllü)
  • She failed the exam despite studying hard.Sıkı çalışmasına rağmen sınavda kaldı. (sonda — virgülsüz)

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • although + cümlecik (nötr, yazılı/sözlü): Although it was raining, we went out.
  • though + cümlecik (daha az resmi; cümle SONUNDA da kullanılabilir): It was raining. We went out, though.
  • even though + cümlecik (although’dan daha güçlü bir vurgu): Even though he was exhausted, he finished the race.
  • despite + isim/-ing (kısa, virgülsüz, resmi yazıda yaygın): Despite the rain, we went out. / Despite feeling tired, she finished the project.
  • in spite of + isim/-ing (despite ile TAMAMEN aynı anlam, sadece daha uzun): In spite of the rain, we went out.

When DON'T we use it?

"Despite of" YAZMA — despite tek başına bir edattır ve “of” almaz; “of” zaten “in spite OF” ifadesinin içindedir.
❌ Despite of the rain, we went out. → ✅ Despite the rain, we went out. / In spite of the rain, we went out.
despite/in spite of’dan sonra doğrudan bir CÜMLECİK (özne+fiil) KULLANMA — bunlar isim/-ing alır, cümlecik almaz.
❌ Despite it was raining, we went out. → ✅ Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. / Although it was raining, we went out.

Hızlı hatırlatma: although/though/even though → özne+fiil (cümlecik). despite/in spite of → isim/-ing. "despite of" diye bir kalıp YOKTUR — ya "despite" (of’suz) ya da "in spite of" kullanılır.

  • Even though it was expensive, they bought the house.Pahalı olmasına rağmen evi satın aldılar.

Common Mistakes

❌ Despite of the traffic, we arrived early.
✅ Despite the traffic, we arrived early. / In spite of the traffic, we arrived early.
WHY? “despite” tek başına “rağmen” anlamına gelen bir edattır ve “of” almaz; öğrenciler bunu “in spite of” ile karıştırıp ikisine de “of” eklerler.
❌ Despite it was raining, we went out.
✅ Although it was raining, we went out.
WHY? despite bir cümlecik (özne+fiil) alamaz, sadece isim/-ing alır; özne+fiil gerekiyorsa although/though/even though kullanılmalıdır.
❌ In spite the rain, we went out.
✅ In spite of the rain, we went out.
WHY? “in spite of” sabit bir kalıptır ve içindeki “of” asla düşürülemez — despite’ın aksine burada “of” zorunludur.
❌ Despite he was tired, he kept working.
✅ Despite being tired, he kept working.
WHY? Özne+fiil (he was) yerine -ing formu (being) kullanılmalıdır, çünkü despite isim/-ing alır.
