Quick Understanding

There is / There are, bir şeyin bir yerde var olduğunu söylemek için kullanılır — Türkçedeki "var" kelimesinin karşılığıdır. "There" burada gerçek bir "orası" anlamı taşımaz, sadece cümleyi başlatan boş bir öznedir; asıl önemli olan ondan sonra gelen isimdir.

There are/were + çoğul isim
"There" öznedir ama gerçek anlam ondan sonraki isimdedir; fiil o isme göre tekil/çoğul olur.

Word Order

Sıra: There — is/are (+not) — isim — (yer). Soruda is/are, there'dan önce başa gelir.

  • There are five students in the classroom.Sınıfta beş öğrenci var.
  • Is there a supermarket near your house?Evinin yakınında bir süpermarket var mı?

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Bir şeyin var olduğunu ilk kez söylerken: There is a cat in the garden.
  • Birden fazla şey varken (there are): There are three chairs in the room.
  • Geçmişte var olan bir şeyi anlatırken (there was/were): There was a party last night.
  • Bir şeyin var OLMADIĞINI söylerken: There isn't any milk in the fridge.
  • Var olup olmadığını sorarken: Is there a bank near here?

When DON'T we use it?

"There" yerine "it" KULLANMA — Türkçedeki "var" ifadesi için mutlaka "there" kullanılır, "it" değil.
❌ It is a book on the table. → ✅ There is a book on the table.
Çoğul isimle "there is" KULLANMA — isim çoğulsa fiil de çoğul (are) olmalıdır.
❌ There is two books on the table. → ✅ There are two books on the table.

Short Answers

Kısa cevap kuralı: "Is there a bank near here?" → Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
"Are there any shops?" → Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
Kısa cevapta "there" tekrar edilir, isim tekrar edilmez.

Common Mistakes

❌ It is a book on the table.
✅ There is a book on the table.
WHY? "var" anlamı için "there" kullanılır; "it" belirli, önceden bilinen bir şeyi işaret eder, "var olma"yı anlatmaz.
❌ There is two books on the table.
✅ There are two books on the table.
WHY? Fiil, "there"a değil ondan sonraki isme (books = çoğul) uymalıdır.
❌ There have a problem.
✅ There is a problem.
WHY? "var olma" için sadece be fiili (is/are/was/were) kullanılır, "have" değil.
❌ Yes, it is. ("Is there a bank?" sorusuna cevap olarak)
✅ Yes, there is.
WHY? Kısa cevapta soruda kullanılan özne (there) aynen tekrarlanır, "it" ile değiştirilmez.
