Quick Understanding

Hem there hem it bazen gerçek bir anlam taşımayan, sadece cümleyi başlatan "boş" özneler olarak kullanılır. There bir şeyin var olduğunu anlatırken, it hava durumu, saat, tarih, mesafe gibi konularda ya da belirli/önceden bahsedilmiş bir şeyi işaret ederken kullanılır. İkisini karıştırmak Türkçe konuşurların en sık yaptığı hatalardan biridir.

Formula

There is/are + isim → BİR ŞEYİN VARLIĞI
It is + sıfat/isim (hava, saat, mesafe, genel yorum) → ANLAMSIZ/BOŞ ÖZNE
İkisi de gerçek bir "o" ya da "orası" anlamı taşımaz; sadece cümleyi grammar açısından kurmak için kullanılırlar.

Affirmative / Negative / Question

Existential There

There is/are + isimThere is a meeting at 3 p.m.

It — Hava/Saat/Mesafe

It is + sıfat/isimIt is 3 p.m. now.

It — Genel Yorum

It is + sıfat + to-infinitiveIt is easy to learn.

Word Order

There + is/are + isim (varlık bildirir) — It + is + sıfat/isim (hava, saat, mesafe, yorum bildirir). İkisi de cümlenin en başında, özne konumunda kullanılır.

  • There is a strong wind today.Bugün güçlü bir rüzgar var. (varlık)
  • It is very windy today.Bugün hava çok rüzgarlı. (hava durumu tarifi)

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Existential there: Bir şeyin varlığını ilk kez tanıtırken. There is a new café on this street.
  • Introductory it — hava durumu: It is raining today.
  • Introductory it — saat/tarih: It is nine o'clock. / It is Monday.
  • Introductory it — mesafe/süre: It is two kilometres to the station. / It takes an hour to get there.
  • Introductory it — genel yorum/değerlendirme: It is important to sleep well.

When DON'T we use it?

Var olma anlamında "it" KULLANMA — bir şeyin var olduğunu ilk kez söylerken "it" değil "there" kullanılır.
❌ It is a problem with the printer. → ✅ There is a problem with the printer.
Hava/saat için "there" KULLANMA — hava, saat, mesafe gibi konularda özne olarak sadece "it" kullanılır, "there" değil.
❌ There is cold today. → ✅ It is cold today.

Short Answers

Hızlı kural: Cümleyi "...var mı?" diye Türkçeye çevirebiliyorsan → there. Cümle hava, saat, tarih, mesafe, süre ya da genel bir yorum bildiriyorsa → it. Kısa cevaplarda da özne aynen korunur: "Is there a shop nearby?" → "Yes, there is." / "Is it cold outside?" → "Yes, it is."

Zihninde şu sırayla ilerle:

TÜRKÇEDE NE DEMEK İSTİYORUM? → "Dışarısı soğuk." mı, "Bahçede bir kedi var." mı?
↓
"VAR/YOK" MU DİYORUM? → Evet (bir kedi VAR) → THERE kullan
↓
HAVA / SAAT / MESAFE Mİ ANLATIYORUM? → Evet (soğuk, saat kaç, ne kadar uzak) → IT kullan
↓
CÜMLELER → "There is a cat in the garden." / "It is cold outside."

Introductory It — Hava, Saat, Mesafe

  • It is snowing heavily outside.Dışarıda yoğun kar yağıyor.
  • It is half past six.Saat altı buçuk.
  • It is about ten kilometres from here.Buradan yaklaşık on kilometre.
  • It took three hours to finish the project.Projeyi bitirmek üç saat sürdü.

Introductory It — Genel Yorum

  • It is important to arrive on time.Zamanında gelmek önemlidir.
  • It is strange that she hasn't called yet.Henüz aramamış olması garip.
  • It's a pity you can't come to the party.Partiye gelemeyeceğin için ne yazık.

Common Mistakes

WHY? Bir sorunun/şeyin var olduğunu ilk kez söylerken "there" kullanılır; "it" belirli, zaten bilinen bir şeyi işaret eder.
❌ There is cold today.
✅ It is cold today.
WHY? Hava durumu için özne her zaman "it"tir, "there" değil — burada var olan bir "şey" değil, genel bir durum anlatılıyor.
❌ There is ten kilometres to the airport.
✅ It is ten kilometres to the airport.
WHY? Mesafe bildiren cümlelerde özne "it"tir; burada bir şeyin var olduğu değil, ne kadar uzaklıkta olduğu anlatılıyor.
❌ It is a lot of traffic on the highway.
✅ There is a lot of traffic on the highway.
WHY? "trafik var" bir varlık ifadesidir, bu yüzden "there" kullanılmalıdır; "it" burada yanlıştır çünkü belirli, önceden bahsedilmiş bir şey işaret edilmiyor.
