Quick Understanding

That ile kurulan isim cümlecikleri (noun clauses), kendi başlarına bir özne ve fiil taşıyan ama büyük cümlenin içinde tek bir isim gibi davranan yan cümleciklerdir. "that + özne + fiil" bloğunu cümlenin öznesi, nesnesi ya da tümleci olarak kullanabiliriz — sanki o koca cümlecik tek kelimelik bir isimmiş gibi.

The Structure

Formula

That + Özne + Fiil = tek bir İSİM bloğu
Özne: That + S + V ..., + V (ana cümle fiili tekil alır)
Nesne: S + think/know/believe/hope + (that) + S + V ...
Tümleç: S + be + (that) + S + V ...
Extraposition: It + be + sıfat + that + S + V ...

Özne

That + S + V, + V (tekil)That she left early surprised us.

Nesne

S + believe/think/know/hope + (that) + clauseI hope (that) you can come.

Word Order

That-clause'un İÇİNDE kelime sırası her zaman normal bir DÜZ CÜMLE gibidir (Özne + Fiil) — asla soru sırasına dönmez, "think/know/believe" gibi fiillerden sonra bile.

  • I know that she is busy today.Bugün meşgul olduğunu biliyorum. ("that is she" DEĞİL)
  • He said that the meeting had ended.Toplantının bittiğini söyledi.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Cümlenin öznesi olarak: That he apologized surprised everyone.
  • believe/think/know/hope gibi fiillerden sonra nesne olarak: I believe that things will get better.
  • be fiilinden sonra tümleç olarak (the problem/truth is that...): The truth is that nobody checked the numbers.
  • Günlük konuşmada that düşebilir (nesne/tümleç konumunda): I hope you're feeling better.
  • It is + sıfat + that... kalıbıyla (extraposition): It is amazing that she finished the marathon.

When DON'T we use it?

That-clause CÜMLENİN ÖZNESİYSE "that"yi ASLA düşürme — that düşerse cümle bozulur, çünkü clause artık nereden başladığı belirsiz bir yığın haline gelir.
❌ He was late annoyed me. → ✅ That he was late annoyed me.
That-clause'u doğrudan bir edattan (preposition) sonra KULLANMA:
❌ I'm confident of that we will win. → ✅ I'm confident that we will win. / I'm confident of the fact that we will win.

Short Answers

Hızlı kural: "that" sadece clause NESNE ya da TÜMLEÇ konumundaysa ve genellikle konuşma dilindeyse düşürülebilir. Clause ÖZNE konumundaysa "that" asla düşmez.

Zihninde şu sırayla ilerle:

TÜRKÇEDE NE DEMEK İSTİYORUM? → "Onun haklı olduğunu düşünüyorum."

İKİNCİ FİKRİ TEK BİR İSİM PARÇASI YAPMAK İÇİN NE EKLERİM? → başına "that" koyarım: that she is right

CÜMLE → "I think (that) she is right."

  • The problem is that nobody booked the tickets.Sorun şu ki, biletleri kimse ayırtmadı.
  • My worry is that we won't finish on time.Endişem şu ki, zamanında bitiremeyeceğiz.
  • I think she's already left.Bence çoktan gitti. (that düştü)

  • It is true that prices have gone up.Fiyatların arttığı doğru.

Common Mistakes

❌ I think what she is right.
✅ I think that she is right.
WHY? Türkçedeki "...-diğini/-olduğunu" kalıbı zihinde "şey" (what) çağrıştırır, ama burada belirsiz bir "şey" değil, tam bir cümle bağlanıyor — bunun İngilizcesi "that"tir, "what" değil.
❌ The problem that we forgot the tickets.
✅ The problem is that we forgot the tickets.
WHY? Tümleç kullanımında "that"i bağlayan asıl fiil "be"dir (is/was); "be" atlanınca cümle çekimsiz, yani eksik kalır.
❌ Is true that the exam was cancelled.
✅ It is true that the exam was cancelled.
WHY? Extraposition yapısında cümlenin gerçek öznesi "that" clause'tur, ama İngilizce cümlenin başında mutlaka bir özne ister; bu yüzden yer tutucu (dummy) "it" zorunludur.
❌ He lied surprised me.
✅ That he lied surprised me.
WHY? Konuşma dilinde "that"i düşürme alışkanlığı, clause ÖZNE konumundayken de uygulanır sanılır — ama özne konumunda "that" cümlenin nereden başladığını gösteren zorunlu bir işarettir, asla düşmez.
❌ I'm worried about that he might be late.
✅ I'm worried that he might be late. / I'm worried about the fact that he might be late.
WHY? "That" clause bir edattan (about, of, in) hemen sonra gelemez; ya edatı tamamen atarsın ya da araya "the fact" gibi gerçek bir isim koyarsın.
