Quick Understanding

Dolaylı sorular (indirect/embedded questions), bir soruyu doğrudan sormak yerine daha kibar ya da resmi bir cümlenin İÇİNE gömerek sormaktır. "Where is the station?" yerine "Could you tell me where the station is?" deriz. En önemli fark: soru, başka bir cümlenin içine girince kelime sırası artık düz cümle gibi kalır — özne fiilden önce gelir, aux-özne yer değiştirmez.

The Structure

Formula

Başlangıç kalıbı + Wh- kelimesi + Özne + Fiil ...?
Başlangıç kalıbı + if/whether + Özne + Fiil ... (Yes/No sorular için)
do/does/did tamamen kaybolur; ana fiil özneye göre normal şekilde çekimlenir (does değil -s eki fiile geçer).

Dolaylı soruda aux öznenin önüne geçmez, özne yerinde kalır — sanki bir düz cümle söylüyormuş gibi.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Could you tell me...? ile kibar rica: Could you tell me what time the shop closes?
  • I wonder... ile merak/belirsizlik: I wonder why he didn't call.
  • Yes/No sorusu gömülüyorsa if/whether kullan: I wonder if she's coming. / Do you know whether it's open?
  • Kelime sırası her zaman düz cümle gibi kalır: aux-özne ters çevrilmez, do/does/did ise tamamen kaybolur.

When DON'T we use it?

Gömülü sorunun içinde ters kelime sırasını KULLANMA — dolaylı soru bir soru gibi DEĞİL, bir isim cümleciği gibi davranır.
❌ Could you tell me where is the bathroom? → ✅ Could you tell me where the bathroom is?
Gömülü Yes/No sorusunda if/whether'i UNUTMA:
❌ I wonder is she coming. → ✅ I wonder if she is coming.

Short Answers

Hızlı kural: Cümlenin BAŞI gerçek bir soruysa (Could you..., Do you know...?) sonuna "?" konur. Cümlenin başı "I wonder" / "I'm not sure" gibi bir İFADEYSE, cümle bir soru DEĞİLDİR — sonuna nokta konur.

Zihninde şu sırayla ilerle:

TÜRKÇEDE NE DEMEK İSTİYORUM? → "İstasyon nerede, söyleyebilir misiniz?"
↓
DOĞRUDAN SORU NASILDI? → "Where IS the station?" (aux önde)
↓
KİBAR BİR BAŞLANGIÇ CÜMLESİNE GÖM → "Could you tell me ..."
↓
İÇ CÜMLEDE SIRAYI DÜZ CÜMLEYE ÇEVİR (özne + fiil) → "Could you tell me where the station is?"

Dönüşümde: aux-özne sırası düzelir (özne öne geçer), soru işareti sadece ana cümle gerçekten soruysa kalır.

Common Mistakes

❌ Could you tell me where is the bathroom?
✅ Could you tell me where the bathroom is?
WHY? Gömülü soru düz cümle sırasını takip eder; "is" özneden (bathroom) sonra kalmalıdır, önüne geçmemelidir.
❌ I wonder what does she want.
✅ I wonder what she wants.
WHY? Gömülü sorularda do/does/did tamamen kaybolur; -s eki (does'un taşıdığı) ana fiile geri döner (wants).
❌ I wonder is she coming.
✅ I wonder if she is coming.
WHY? Doğrudan sorularda Yes/No sorusu aux ile başlar, ama gömülü hâlde bir wh- kelimesi yoktur; bu boşluğu "if" ya da "whether" doldurur.
❌ I wonder if she is coming?
✅ I wonder if she is coming.
WHY? "I wonder" bir soru değil bir İFADEDİR (merak ettiğimi söylüyorum); cümle yapı olarak düz cümle olduğu için sonuna soru işareti değil nokta konur.
❌ Do you know what time does the train leave?
✅ Do you know what time the train leaves?
WHY? Ana cümle (Do you know...?) zaten bir soru; içindeki gömülü kısım (what time the train leaves) ikinci bir soru gibi kurulmaz, düz cümle sırasında kalır.
