must, have to, need to — and the big difference between mustn't and don't have to.

Quick Understanding

Must, have to, have got to ve need to, bir şeyin yapılması gerektiğini (zorunluluk) anlatmak için kullanılır. Olumsuzda ise iki tamamen farklı anlam ortaya çıkar: mustn't bir şeyin YASAK olduğunu, don't have to ise bir şeyi yapmaya GEREK olmadığını anlatır — bu iki yapı birbirinin zıttıdır ve karıştırılmamalıdır.

The Structure

Formula

Subject + must (not) + V1 (do/does OLMADAN, sadece present)
Subject + have/has to + V1 (do/does/did ile soru-olumsuz, tüm zamanlar)
Subject + have/has got to + V1 (present, konuşma dili)
Subject + need to + V1
must sadece present tense'te vardır; geçmiş ve gelecek için have to kullanılır (had to / will have to).

  • You must wear a seatbelt.Emniyet kemeri takmalısın.
  • We don't have to hurry, we have plenty of time.Acele etmemize gerek yok, bolca zamanımız var.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • must: kişisel/öznel zorunluluk, konuşanın kendi kararı — I must call my mother tonight.
  • have to: dışarıdan gelen zorunluluk, bir kural veya başka biri tarafından belirlenen — Employees have to wear a badge.
  • have got to: günlük konuşma dilinde have to'nun yerine geçer — I've got to leave now.
  • need to: pratik bir ihtiyaç/gereklilik bildirir — You need to drink more water.

When DON'T we use it?

"mustn't" ile "don't have to"yu KARIŞTIRMA — bunlar birbirinin ZITTIDIR!
mustn't = YASAK (yapma!): You mustn't park here. (Buraya park etmek yasak.)
don't have to = GEREK YOK (istersen yapabilirsin, zorunlu değil): You don't have to park here, but you can if you want. (Buraya park etmen gerekmiyor.)
"must"u GEÇMİŞ zamanda kullanma — must'ın geçmiş hali yoktur, "had to" kullanılır.
❌ I must go to the doctor yesterday. → ✅ I had to go to the doctor yesterday.

Short Answers

Altın kural: mustn't = YASAK, don't have to = GEREK YOK. Bu iki yapı tam zıttır, ikisini karıştırmak anlamı tersine çevirir. Kısa cevap have to sisteminde do/does ile verilir: Yes, I do. / No, I don't.

  • I must remember to call the dentist tomorrow.Yarın dişçiyi aramayı hatırlamalıyım.
  • All passengers have to show their passports at the gate.Tüm yolcuların kapıda pasaportlarını göstermesi gerekiyor.
  • I've got to finish this by five o'clock.Bunu saat beşe kadar bitirmem gerekiyor.
  • You need to submit the form before Friday.Formu cumaya kadar teslim etmen gerekiyor.

Yasak: Mustn't

  • You mustn't touch that wire, it's dangerous.O kabloya dokunmamalısın, tehlikeli.
  • Students mustn't use their phones during the exam.Öğrenciler sınav sırasında telefonlarını kullanmamalı.
  • You mustn't park in front of the entrance.Girişin önüne park etmemelisin.

Gereksizlik: Don't Have To / Don't Need To

  • You don't have to bring anything, we have everything we need.Bir şey getirmene gerek yok, ihtiyacımız olan her şey var.
  • She doesn't need to work; she has enough savings.Çalışmasına gerek yok; yeterince birikimi var.
  • We didn't have to wait long for the bus.Otobüs için uzun süre beklememize gerek kalmadı.
  • You don't have to finish it today; tomorrow is fine too.Bugün bitirmen gerekmiyor; yarın da olur.
  • Do we have to wear a uniform at this school?Bu okulda üniforma giymemiz gerekiyor mu?

Common Mistakes

❌ You mustn't come to the party if you're busy. ("gelmene gerek yok" demek isteniyor)
✅ You don't have to come to the party if you're busy.
WHY? "mustn't" YASAK anlamına gelir (partiye gelmen yasak), oysa öğrenci "gerek yok, istersen gelme" demek istiyordu — bu en kritik anlam karışıklığıdır.
❌ I must go to the hospital yesterday.
✅ I had to go to the hospital yesterday.
WHY? "must"ın geçmiş zaman hali yoktur; geçmişteki zorunluluk için "had to" kullanılır.
❌ Do you must finish this today?
✅ Do you have to finish this today?
WHY? "must" do/does ile soru kurmaz (kendisi modal fiildir, başa gelir); "do you have to...?" doğru kalıptır.
❌ We have got to submitting the report by Monday. (resmi bir raporda)
✅ We have to submit the report by Monday.
WHY? "have got to" çok gündelik/konuşma diline aittir, resmi yazıda "have to" tercih edilir; ayrıca ardından V1 gelir, V-ing değil.
❌ I don't must go to work today.
✅ I don't have to go to work today. / I mustn't go to work today. (anlama göre)
WHY? "must" olumsuzda "don't" ile birlikte kullanılmaz; anlam "gerek yok" ise don't have to, "yasak" ise mustn't seçilmelidir.
