Quick Understanding

Must ve have to, ikisi de "zorunluluk" anlatır ama zorunluluğun kaynağı farklıdır: must, konuşmacının KENDİ hissettiği zorunluluğu; have to ise DIŞARIDAN gelen bir kural ya da otoriteyi anlatır.

How It Works

When do we use each?

  • MUST: kişisel görüş/güçlü tavsiye — "You must try this restaurant."
  • HAVE TO: kural, kanun, başkasının koyduğu zorunluluk — "You have to wear a seatbelt."
  • MUSTN'T: yasak (yapma!) — "You mustn't smoke here."
  • DON'T HAVE TO: gerekli değil (istersen yap, istemezsen yapma) — "You don't have to come if you're busy."

When DON'T we use Must?

Geçmiş zaman için MUST kullanma — must'ın geçmiş hâli yoktur, her zaman had to kullanılır.
❌ Yesterday I must go to the dentist. → ✅ Yesterday I had to go to the dentist.
Ayrıca sorularda "have to" daha doğaldır: "Must you...?" yerine "Do you have to...?" tercih edilir.

Yes, I do. / No, I don't. (have to soruları do/does ile cevaplanır, must ile değil)

  • I must call my mother tonight.Annemi bu gece aramalıyım (kendi isteğim).

Have to (dışsal / kural)

  • Students have to wear a uniform.Öğrenciler üniforma giymek zorunda (okul kuralı).
  • I have to renew my passport this year.Bu yıl pasaportumu yenilemem gerekiyor.
  • Does he have to work on weekends?Hafta sonları çalışmak zorunda mı?

Mustn't vs Don't have to (KRİTİK FARK)

  • You mustn't park here. (yasak!)Buraya park etmen yasak.
  • You don't have to park here — there's space at the back. (zorunlu değil, istersen)Buraya park etmek zorunda değilsin.
  • You mustn't tell anyone. (kesinlikle yasak)Kimseye söylemen yasak.
  • You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. (seçim senin)Söylemek zorunda değilsin.

Common Mistakes

❌ Yesterday I musted go to the dentist.
✅ Yesterday I had to go to the dentist.
WHY? "Must"ın geçmiş hâli yoktur; geçmiş zorunluluk için her zaman "had to" kullanılır.
❌ You mustn't come if you're busy. (kastedilen: gerekli değil)
✅ You don't have to come if you're busy.
TÜRKÇE MANTIK: Türkçede "gelmek zorunda değilsin" ile "gelmen yasak" çok farklı olduğu gibi, İngilizcede de mustn't (yasak) ile don't have to (gerekli değil) birbirinin yerine KULLANILAMAZ.
❌ She must works every weekend.
✅ She has to work every weekend.
WHY? Modal fiillerden sonra (must dahil) fiil hep V1 (yalın) hâlde kalır, -s eklenmez; ayrıca burada dışsal bir program anlatıldığı için "have to" daha doğaldır.
