Past Continuous vs Past Simple

Quick Understanding

Bir cümlede genellikle iki geçmiş olay birlikte anlatılır: biri devam ederken (Past Continuous) diğeri aniden gerçekleşir (Past Simple) ve onu keser. Bu iki zamanı doğru seçmek, hangi eylemin "uzun/sürekli", hangisinin "kısa/ani" olduğunu anlamaktan geçer.

The Structure

Formula

while + Past Continuous, Past Continuous (iki eş zamanlı eylem)
Past Continuous + when + Past Simple (uzun eylem + onu kesen ani olay)
while genelde "süren" eylemi tanıtır; when genelde "ani" olayı tanıtır.

Affirmative / Negative / Question

Affirmative

Subject + was/were + V-ing + when + Subject + V2I was sleeping when you texted me.

Negative

Subject + wasn't/weren't + V-ing + when...He wasn't paying attention when the teacher spoke.

Question

What were you doing when...?What were you doing when the alarm went off?

Word Order

while/when cümlesi başta veya sonda olabilir; başta ise virgülle ayrılır.

  • While I was walking home, it started to rain.Eve yürürken yağmur yağmaya başladı.
  • It started to rain while I was walking home.Ben eve yürürken yağmur yağmaya başladı.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Devam eden bir eylemi ani bir olayın kesmesi: I was studying when the power went out.
  • while ile iki devam eden eylemi eş zamanlı bağlamak: While she was cooking, he was cleaning the house.
  • when ile ani bir olayı, devam eden bir eylemin ortasına yerleştirmek: The baby started crying when the music stopped.
  • Bir olayın tam sırasında ne olduğunu vurgulamak: What were you doing when the accident happened?

When DON'T we use it?

İki eylem de kısa ve ardışıksa iki fiili de Past Continuous YAPMA — ardışık, tamamlanmış olaylar için ikisi de Past Simple olmalı.
❌ I was opening the door and I was seeing him. → ✅ I opened the door and I saw him.
while'dan sonra Past Simple KULLANMA (devam eden eylem için): ❌ While I cooked, he arrived. → ✅ While I was cooking, he arrived.

Short Answers

Bu yapıda genelde tam cümle cevap verilir, ama kısa cevap için her fiil kendi zamanına göre cevaplanır: "Were you sleeping?" → "Yes, I was." / "Did it ring?" → "Yes, it did."

Zihninde şu sırayla ilerle:

TÜRKÇEDE NE DEMEK İSTİYORUM? → "Ben duş alırken telefon çaldı."

HANGİSİ UZUN SÜRÜYORDU, HANGİSİ ANİ? → duş almak = uzun süren, telefon çalması = ani
↓
UZUN OLAN → Past Continuous / ANİ OLAN → Past Simple

CÜMLE → "I was taking a shower when the phone rang."

Eş Zamanlı Eylemler (while)

  • While Elif was reading, her brother was playing video games.Elif kitap okurken kardeşi video oyunu oynuyordu.
  • While I was working on the report, my colleague was preparing the slides.Ben raporu hazırlarken meslektaşım slaytları hazırlıyordu.

Karşılaştırma / Sıralı Olaylar

  • He finished his coffee and left the café.Kahvesini bitirdi ve kafeden ayrıldı. (iki ardışık olay = Past Simple)
  • I was cleaning the kitchen when my phone buzzed.Mutfağı temizlerken telefonum titredi. (uzun + kesen olay)
  • What were you doing when the news broke?Haber çıktığında ne yapıyordun?
  • While the kids were sleeping, we were talking quietly in the kitchen.Çocuklar uyurken biz mutfakta sessizce konuşuyorduk.
  • The car broke down while we were driving to the coast.Sahile giderken araba bozuldu.

Common Mistakes

❌ I opened the door and I was seeing my sister.
✅ I opened the door and saw my sister.
WHY? İki eylem de kısa, ardışık ve tamamlanmışsa ikisi de Past Simple olur; "see" gibi ani bir eylemi Past Continuous yapmak yanlıştır.
❌ While I cooked, the phone was ringing.
✅ While I was cooking, the phone rang.
WHY? "while" genelde devam eden (uzun) eylemi tanıtır, ani olan olayı değil; ani olay when + Past Simple ile verilir.
❌ When I was arriving home, I was calling my mother.
✅ When I arrived home, I called my mother. / When I got home, I was calling my mother.
WHY? "arrive" gibi ani bir fiil genellikle Past Simple ile kurulur; iki fiili de Past Continuous yapmak eylemlerin sırasını belirsizleştirir.
❌ When she was leaving the room, everyone was clapping.
✅ When she left the room, everyone was clapping.
WHY? "when" cümleciğindeki eylem genellikle ani/tamamlanmış olur (left); devam eden tepki ise Past Continuous (was clapping) ile verilir.
