Quick Understanding

Past Perfect, geçmişte bahsettiğimiz bir andan daha önce olmuş bir olayı anlatır — yani "geçmişin geçmişi"dir. Türkçedeki "-mişti" ekiyle (gitmişti, bitirmişti, görmüştü) örtüşür: bir olay, başka bir geçmiş olaydan önce zaten olup bitmiştir.

The Structure

Formula

Subject + had + V3 (past participle)
had, tüm öznelerle (I/you/he/she/it/we/they) AYNI kalır — has/have ayrımı yoktur; sadece V3 (fiilin üçüncü hali) kullanılır.

Affirmative / Negative / Question

Affirmative

Subject + had + V3They had finished dinner by 8pm.

Negative

Subject + hadn't + V3He hadn't seen the message yet.

Question

Had + subject + V3?Had you met her before the party?

Word Order

Özne — had (+not) — V3 — (nesne). before/after/by the time cümleleri başta veya sonda olabilir.

  • By the time the movie started, we had already found our seats.Film başladığında biz çoktan yerlerimizi bulmuştuk.
  • She had never traveled abroad before that trip.O geziden önce hiç yurt dışına çıkmamıştı.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • İki geçmiş olaydan daha önce gerçekleşeni belirtmek için: The train had left before we got to the station.
  • Bir olaylar zincirinde en başta olanı vurgulamak için: She had studied medicine before she became a writer.
  • before / after / by the time ile sıralama kurmak için: By the time I called him, he had already heard the news.
  • already / just / never gibi zarflarla tamamlanmışlığı vurgulamak için: I had never seen snow before that winter.

When DON'T we use it?

Sadece tek bir geçmiş olay anlatılıyorsa Past Perfect KULLANMA — iki olay arasında bir "önce/sonra" ilişkisi yoksa Past Simple yeterlidir.
❌ I had visited my grandmother last Sunday. → ✅ I visited my grandmother last Sunday.
had'i present perfect'teki have ile KARIŞTIRMA: ❌ I have had finished before you arrived. → ✅ I had finished before you arrived.

Short Answers

Yes, I had. / No, I hadn't.
Not: had, kısa cevaplarda tekrar edilmez ama V3 tekrarlanmaz, sadece had kalır.

Temel (had + V3)

  • When I got to the airport, the plane had already taken off.Havaalanına vardığımda uçak çoktan kalkmıştı.
  • She had lived in three different countries before she turned twenty.Yirmi yaşına gelmeden önce üç farklı ülkede yaşamıştı.
  • They hadn't finished the project when the deadline arrived.Teslim tarihi geldiğinde projeyi bitirmemişlerdi.

Sıralama (before/after/by the time)

  • By the time the guests arrived, Mert had cleaned the whole house.Misafirler geldiğinde Mert bütün evi temizlemişti.
  • After she had signed the contract, she felt relieved.Sözleşmeyi imzaladıktan sonra rahatladı.
  • The children were tired because they had walked for hours.Çocuklar yorgundu çünkü saatlerdir yürümüşlerdi.

already/just/never ile

  • I had just finished my coffee when the phone rang.Telefon çaldığında kahvemi yeni bitirmiştim.
  • Had you ever eaten sushi before that restaurant?O restorandan önce hiç suşi yemiş miydin?
  • We had never seen such a big storm before.Daha önce hiç bu kadar büyük bir fırtına görmemiştik.
  • I hadn't heard the news until my sister told me.Kız kardeşim söyleyene kadar haberi duymamıştım.
  • Zeynep had already left the office when I called her.

Common Mistakes

❌ I had visited my grandmother last Sunday.
✅ I visited my grandmother last Sunday.
WHY? Tek bir geçmiş olay varsa, önce/sonra ilişkisi kurulmuyorsa Past Simple yeterlidir — Past Perfect ikinci bir geçmiş referans noktası gerektirir.
❌ When I arrived, she has already left.
✅ When I arrived, she had already left.
WHY? Present Perfect (has) şimdiyle bağlantılıdır; ama burada referans noktası geçmişte (arrived) olduğu için had (Past Perfect) gerekir.
❌ By the time we arrived, the film had start.
✅ By the time we arrived, the film had started.
WHY? had'den sonra fiil her zaman V3 (past participle) olmalı, V1 (yalın hal) değil.
❌ She had went to bed before I got home.
✅ She had gone to bed before I got home.
WHY? "go" fiilinin V3 hali "gone"dur, "went" (V2) değil — had + V2 karışımı sık yapılan bir hatadır.
