Quick Understanding

Correlative conjunctions (eşleşen bağlaçlar), tek başına değil, her zaman çift halde kullanılan bağlaçlardır. İki öğeyi (kelime, öbek veya cümle) birbirine eşit ağırlıkta bağlarlar: both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also. Türkçede tam karşılıkları yoktur ama "hem...hem de", "ya...ya da", "ne...ne de" kalıplarına çok benzerler.

A ve B, aynı gramer türünde olmalı: iki isim, iki fiil, iki sıfat, iki cümle... Bu kurala "paralellik (parallelism)" denir.

Word Order

Kural: bağlacın iki parçasından hemen sonra gelen A ve B öğeleri, gramer açısından birbirinin eşi (paralel) olmalıdır.

  • ✅ He is both talented and hardworking.Hem yetenekli hem çalışkan. (sıfat + sıfat)
  • ✅ I want to either stay here or go home.Ya burada kalmak ya da eve gitmek istiyorum. (fiil + fiil)

not only...but also cümle başında kullanılırsa, "not only"den sonra devrik yapı (inversion) gelir: Not only did she arrive late, but she also forgot her passport.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • both...and — iki şeyin de doğru/geçerli olduğunu vurgulamak için: Both my parents work in Ankara.
  • either...or — iki seçenekten birinin geçerli olduğunu belirtmek için: You can either call me or send a message.
  • neither...nor — iki şeyin de doğru OLMADIĞINI belirtmek için: Neither the manager nor the staff knew about the change.
  • not only...but also — birinci bilgiye ek olarak ikinci, genelde daha çarpıcı bir bilgiyi vurgulamak için: Not only did she pass the exam, but she also got the highest score.

When DON'T we use it?

Eşleşen bağlaçların iki parçasını KARIŞTIRMA — "both" her zaman "and" ile, "either" her zaman "or" ile, "neither" her zaman "nor" ile gelir; birbirlerinin yerine geçmezler.
❌ Both English and or French are useful. → ✅ Both English and French are useful.
Bağlacın iki tarafında FARKLI gramer yapıları KULLANMA (paralellik kuralı): ❌ She likes both singing and to dance. → ✅ She likes both singing and dancing.

Short Answers

Özne-fiil uyumu kuralı: "both...and" her zaman ÇOĞUL fiil alır. "either...or", "neither...nor" ve "not only...but also" ile fiil, bağlaca EN YAKIN öznenin tekil/çoğul haline göre çekimlenir (proximity rule).
Neither the students nor the teacher was ready. (teacher tekil → was)
Neither the teacher nor the students were ready. (students çoğul → were)

  • Either the printer is broken, or the cable is loose.Ya yazıcı bozuk ya da kablo gevşek.
  • Neither the plan nor the budget was approved.Ne plan ne de bütçe onaylandı.
  • Not only is she fluent in French, but she also speaks Japanese.Sadece Fransızcayı akıcı konuşmakla kalmıyor, Japonca da konuşuyor.

Common Mistakes

❌ Both Tom and Jerry is my friends.
✅ Both Tom and Jerry are my friends.
WHY? "both...and" her zaman ÇOĞUL fiil alır; Türkçede "hem...hem de" tekil gibi hissettirse de İngilizcede fiil mutlaka çoğul olur.
❌ She likes both reading and to swim.
✅ She likes both reading and swimming.
WHY? Bağlacın iki tarafındaki öğeler aynı gramer yapısında olmalı (paralellik) — biri -ing ise diğeri de -ing olmalı.
❌ Either the teacher or the students is wrong.
✅ Either the teacher or the students are wrong.
WHY? either/or ve neither/nor'da fiil, bağlaca EN YAKIN özneye göre çekimlenir — burada "students" çoğul olduğu için fiil de çoğul olur.
❌ I don't have neither time nor money.
✅ I have neither time nor money.
WHY? "neither...nor" zaten olumsuz anlam taşır; Türkçedeki "ne zamanım var ne de param" alışkanlığıyla cümleye ayrıca "don't" eklenmemeli — İngilizcede çifte olumsuzluk yanlıştır.
❌ Not only he was late, but he also forgot the tickets.
✅ Not only was he late, but he also forgot the tickets.
WHY? "Not only" cümle başında olduğunda, tıpkı olumsuz zarflarda olduğu gibi devrik yapı (auxiliary + subject) gerekir.
