Quick Understanding

Subjunctive (dilek-şart kipi), İngilizcede normal (indicative) cümle çekiminin dışına çıkan özel bir fiil biçimidir. En sık karşılaşacağın türü mandative subjunctive'dir: suggest, insist, demand, recommend gibi fiillerden sonra gelen "that" cümleciğinde, fiil öznesine göre HİÇ ÇEKİMLENMEZ — üçüncü tekil şahısta bile -s almaz, geçmiş bir öneri bile olsa -ed almaz. Ayrıca "if I were you" gibi kalıplaşmış (formulaic) subjunctive yapılar da vardır.

The Structure

Formula

MANDATIVE: suggest/insist/demand/recommend/propose + that + subject + V1 (bare infinitive — HİÇ ÇEKİM YOK, -s YOK)
Örnek: The doctor recommends that he QUIT smoking. (quits değil)
OLUMSUZ MANDATIVE: ...that + subject + NOT + V1 (do/does/did KULLANILMAZ)
Örnek: I insist that she NOT be blamed for this. (doesn't be değil, do değil)
FORMULAIC: if I WERE you / as it WERE / far be it from me / so BE it

Affirmative / Negative / Question

Mandative (Olumlu)

suggest/insist/demand + that + subject + V1I suggest that he leave now.

Mandative (Olumsuz)

...that + subject + not + V1She insisted that he not go alone.

Formulaic (Kalıplaşmış)

If I were you, I would...Come what may, we'll finish this.

Word Order

that + özne + (not) + fiilin yalın hâli. Be fiili subjunctive'de her özne için "be" olarak kalır (was/is/am değil).

  • They demanded that the manager be present.Müdürün orada bulunmasını talep ettiler.
  • It is important that everyone arrive on time.Herkesin zamanında gelmesi önemli.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Mandative subjunctive: suggest/insist/demand/recommend/propose/request gibi öneri-talep bildiren fiillerden sonraki "that" cümleciğinde — I recommend that she see a specialist.
  • Aynı kural "it is essential/important/vital that..." gibi sıfat kalıplarında da geçerlidir — It is essential that he arrive on time.
  • Formulaic (kalıplaşmış) subjunctive: sabit, deyimleşmiş ifadelerde — If I were you, I wouldn't say that. / God save the Queen. / So be it.
  • Subjunctive, zaman belirtmez — geçmişte önerilen bir şey için bile fiil yalın kalır: I suggested that he take the exam again (took değil, take).

When DON'T we use it?

suggest/insist/demand sonrası fiile -s veya -ed EKLEME — bu, subjunctive'in en sık yapılan hatasıdır.
❌ I suggest that he takes the exam again. → ✅ I suggest that he take the exam again.
❌ She insisted that he apologised. → ✅ She insisted that he apologise.
"if I was you" DEME — formulaic subjunctive'de "was" değil "were" kullanılır, özne tekil bile olsa: ❌ If I was you → ✅ If I were you.

Short Answers

Hızlı kural: suggest/insist/demand/recommend + that + ÖZNE + FİİLİN YALIN HÂLİ. Özneye bakmadan (he/she/it dahil) fiile -s eklenmez, zamana bakmadan (geçmiş bile olsa) fiile -ed eklenmez.

Mandative Subjunctive — Suggest / Recommend

  • I suggest that he take the exam again next month.Sınava gelecek ay tekrar girmesini öneriyorum.
  • The teacher recommends that every student read this book.Öğretmen her öğrencinin bu kitabı okumasını tavsiye ediyor.
  • My doctor suggested that I cut down on sugar.Doktorum şeker tüketimimi azaltmamı önerdi.
  • We propose that the meeting be postponed until Monday.Toplantının pazartesiye ertelenmesini öneriyoruz.

Mandative Subjunctive — Insist / Demand

  • She insisted that he apologise immediately.Hemen özür dilemesi konusunda ısrar etti.
  • The committee demanded that the report be submitted by Friday.Komite raporun cumaya kadar teslim edilmesini talep etti.
  • It is essential that this information remain confidential.Bu bilginin gizli kalması şarttır.
  • The judge ordered that the documents not be destroyed.Hâkim belgelerin imha edilmemesini emretti.

Formulaic (Kalıplaşmış) Subjunctive

  • If I were you, I would talk to her directly.Senin yerinde olsam, doğrudan onunla konuşurdum.
  • She acts as if she were the boss.Sanki patronmuş gibi davranıyor.
  • Long live the king!Kral çok yaşasın!
  • Come what may, we will finish this project.Ne olursa olsun, bu projeyi bitireceğiz.

Common Mistakes

❌ I suggest that he takes the exam again.
✅ I suggest that he take the exam again.
WHY? Türkçe konuşanlar özne üçüncü tekil olduğu için otomatik olarak -s eklemek ister, ama subjunctive'de özne ne olursa olsun fiil YALIN kalır.
❌ She insisted that he apologised.
✅ She insisted that he apologise.
WHY? Ana cümle (insisted) geçmiş zamanda olsa bile, subjunctive'de zaman uyumu (time agreement) YOKTUR — fiil hep yalın hâlde kalır.
❌ I insist that she doesn't go alone.
✅ I insist that she not go alone.
WHY? Subjunctive'in olumsuzunda do/does/did YOKTUR — "not" doğrudan fiilin önüne konur.
❌ If I was you, I would apologise.
✅ If I were you, I would apologise.
WHY? Formulaic subjunctive'de be fiili her özneyle "were" olur (was değil) — bu, gerçek dışı/hayali bir durumu vurgular.
❌ "He suggests that she goes" ile "He suggests that she go" arasında anlam farkı yoktur, ikisi de doğrudur.
✅ Sadece "He suggests that she GO" gramer olarak doğrudur (mandative subjunctive); "goes" formu standart/resmi İngilizcede yanlış kabul edilir.
WHY? Bazı öğrenciler İngilizce indicative mantığıyla düşünüp -s'li formun da "doğal/kabul edilebilir" olduğunu sanır; ama suggest gibi fiillerle that cümleciğinde subjunctive zorunludur.
