Quick Understanding

İngilizcede koşul (şart) cümleleri kurmanın tek yolu if değildir. unless (eğer ...mezse), in case (ihtimale karşı), as long as / provided (that) / providing (that) (yeter ki, şu şartla) ve on condition that (şu şart altında) gibi bağlaçlar da aynı işi görür, ama her biri farklı bir mantık ve farklı bir durum için kullanılır. Ayrıca bazen 'if' hiç söylenmeden de koşul anlamı verilebilir.

Tüm bu bağlaçlardan sonraki fiil, gelecek anlamı taşısa bile present tense'te kalır — tıpkı if ile first conditional'da olduğu gibi. "will" kullanılmaz.

Word Order

Koşul cümlesi (unless/in case/... ile başlayan kısım) cümlenin başında ya da sonunda olabilir. Başta ise virgül kullanılır, sonda ise virgül kullanılmaz.

  • Unless you call me, I won't come.Beni aramazsan gelmeyeceğim.
  • I won't come unless you call me.Beni aramazsan gelmeyeceğim. (virgülsüz)

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • unless (= if...not): olumsuz bir şartı anlatır ama fiil olumlu kalır. Unless you hurry, we'll be late.
  • in case: bir şey olma ihtimaline karşı önceden bir şey yaparız (sonuç değil, önlemdir). Take a jacket in case it gets cold.
  • as long as / so long as: bir şeyin gerçekleşmesi için tek şart budur, başka bir şey önemli değildir. You can stay out late as long as you call me.
  • provided (that) / providing (that): as long as ile aynı anlamda ama daha resmi. You may borrow the car provided that you drive carefully.
  • on condition that: çok resmi, genellikle anlaşma/sözleşme dilinde kullanılır. She signed the contract on condition that her name stayed private.
  • what if: hipotetik bir soru sormak için — "ya ... olursa?". What if it rains during the wedding?

When DON'T we use it?

unless'i "if...not" gibi çifte olumsuz yapma: unless zaten "eğer ...mezse" demektir, bir daha "not" ekleme.
❌ Unless you don't study, you will fail. → ✅ Unless you study, you will fail.
in case'i "if" yerine kullanma: in case, sonucu değil önlemi anlatır — "if" ile aynı mantık değildir.
❌ In case it rains, take an umbrella and you'll stay dry. (yanlış mantık) → ✅ Take an umbrella in case it rains. (yağma ihtimaline karşı önceden al)

Short Answers

Hızlı kural: unless, in case, as long as, provided/providing, on condition that — hepsinden sonra fiil present tense'tedir, "will" ASLA kullanılmaz. Sadece ana cümlede (sonuç kısmında) will/imperative olabilir.

WHY? unless zaten "eğer ...mezse" demektir; bir de "don't" eklemek çifte olumsuzluk yaratır ve anlamı tersine çevirir.
❌ Take an umbrella in case it will rain.
✅ Take an umbrella in case it rains.
WHY? in case'den sonra gelecek anlam olsa bile present tense kullanılır, will kullanılmaz — tıpkı unless, as long as, provided gibi.
❌ In case it rains, we will stay dry.
✅ We took an umbrella in case it rains.
WHY? in case, if gibi bir sonuç bağlacı değildir — bir olay gerçekleşmeden ÖNCE alınan önlemi anlatır, "eğer olursa şu olur" mantığında kullanılmaz.
❌ You can come with us providing that you will be quiet.
✅ You can come with us providing that you are quiet.
WHY? providing/provided (that) her zaman present tense alır, will değil.
❌ On condition that if you call me first.
✅ On condition that you call me first.
WHY? on condition that kendi başına bir koşul bağlacıdır; yanına ayrıca "if" eklenmez.
