Quick Understanding

Be supposed to, bir şeyin beklendiğini, planlandığını ya da kuralına göre öyle olması gerektiğini anlatan bir yapıdır. Genelde bu beklentinin dışarıdan geldiğini (bir kural, program, plan, ya da genel kanı) ve çoğu zaman gerçekleşenin bu beklentiden farklı olduğunu ima eder — özellikle geçmiş zamanda kullanıldığında.

The Structure

Formula

Subject + am/is/are (+ not) + supposed to + V1 (şimdi/gelecek beklenti)
Subject + was/were (+ not) + supposed to + V1 (geçmişte beklenen ama genelde gerçekleşmeyen)
supposed, "suppose" fiilinin V3 (past participle) hâlidir; be fiili özneye ve zamana göre değişir, "supposed to" kısmı hep aynı kalır.

Affirmative / Negative / Question

Affirmative

Subject + am/is/are + supposed to + V1Subject + was/were + supposed to + V1She is supposed to call me tonight.

Word Order

Özne — be (am/is/are/was/were) — (not) — supposed — to — fiil. Olumsuzda "not", be fiilinden hemen sonra, "supposed"tan önce gelir.

  • You are not supposed to park here.Buraya park etmen beklenmiyor (yasak).
  • We were supposed to leave at noon.Öğlen ayrılmamız gerekiyordu (ama ayrılmadık).

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • Plan/program bildirmek için (şimdiki zaman): The train is supposed to arrive at 9.
  • Kural/beklenen davranış bildirmek için: Employees are supposed to wear a uniform.
  • Geçmişte planlanan ama gerçekleşmeyen bir şeyi anlatmak için: I was supposed to call her, but I forgot.
  • Genel kanı/söylenti aktarmak için ("...olduğu söyleniyor"): This restaurant is supposed to be excellent.

When DON'T we use it?

be supposed to'yu kesin, kişisel bir tahmin için KULLANMA — bu bağlamda must/should daha doğrudur.
△ It's supposed to rain, I'm sure of it. → ✅ It must be going to rain, I'm sure of it. (kendi kesin tahminin için)
"was supposed to" kullanıp sonucu belirtmeyi UNUTMA — bu yapı genelde "ama olmadı" anlamı taşıdığı için bağlamsız bırakmak kafa karıştırabilir: We were supposed to meet at 6 (but something came up).

Short Answers

Kısa cevap be fiili ile verilir: "Is she supposed to come?" → "Yes, she is. / No, she isn't."
"Was he supposed to call?" → "Yes, he was. / No, he wasn't."

Söylenti / Genel Kanı

Common Mistakes

❌ I am suppose to call him.
✅ I am supposed to call him.
WHY? "supposed" mutlaka -ed ile yazılır çünkü bu bir sıfat/past participle formudur; "suppose" fiilin yalın hâlidir ve burada yanlıştır.
❌ She supposed to be here at 5.
✅ She is supposed to be here at 5.
WHY? "be" fiili unutulmuş — supposed to her zaman am/is/are/was/were ile birlikte kullanılır, tek başına bir fiil değildir.
❌ We were supposed to arrived at noon.
✅ We were supposed to arrive at noon.
WHY? supposed to'dan sonra fiilin yalın hâli (bare infinitive with to) gelir, V2/V3 formu değil: to ARRIVE, to ARRIVED değil.
❌ "I was supposed to go" ile "I was going to go" tamamen aynı anlama gelir.
✅ was supposed to = dışarıdan gelen bir plan/beklenti (genelde gerçekleşmedi); was going to = kişinin kendi niyeti (o da gerçekleşmemiş olabilir).
WHY? was supposed to bir kural/programı, was going to ise kişinin kendi niyetini/planını vurgular — anlam kaynağı farklıdır.
