C Your turn
Write four sentences about sports you or someone you know has taken up, given up, shown off in, or how people get along in a team.
Transitive phrasal verbs need an object (take up a sport, set up a camp, check out the equipment, give up a hobby, break in new boots); some can be separated (take a hobby up). Intransitive phrasal verbs are used without an object (show off, settle down, get along, give in, catch on).
TRGeçişli (transitive) phrasal verb'ler bir nesneye ihtiyaç duyar (take up a sport, set up a camp, check out the equipment, give up a hobby, break in new boots). Bazıları ayrılabilir (take a hobby up). Geçişsiz (intransitive) phrasal verb'ler ise nesne almadan tek başına kullanılır (show off, settle down, get along, give in, catch on).
We use these phrasal verbs to talk about starting or stopping a sport or hobby, checking equipment, or describing how teammates behave.
TRBir sporu ya da hobiyi anlatırken, ekipmanı incelerken ya da bir takım arkadaşlığını tarif ederken bu phrasal verb'leri kullanırız.
Positive

- He showed off his new board to everyone. He showed off to everyone with his new board. / He showed off in front of everyone.
'Show off' is intransitive; it doesn't take a direct object — use it with a preposition like 'to' or 'in front of'.
TR'Show off' geçişsizdir; doğrudan nesne almaz, 'to/in front of' gibi bir edatla kullanılır.
- The wrestler didn't give in the match. The wrestler didn't give in during the match.
'Give in' is intransitive and takes no direct object; use a preposition like 'during' or 'to' instead.
TR'Give in' geçişsizdir, doğrudan nesne almaz; 'during/to' gibi edatlarla kullanılır.

Born for the Rush?
Why do some people happily jump out of aeroplanes or ride down a mountain on a board, while others would never dream of it? Decades ago, a psychologist proposed that certain people are simply wired to seek out risk. He called them 'Type T' individuals — the 'T' standing for thrill. According to his theory, these people don't just tolerate danger; they actively look for it.
Scientists who study this idea point to biology as one possible explanation. Type T brains may release dopamine, the chemical linked to pleasure, more strongly during risky activities than an average person's brain does. This could explain why a thrill-seeker's heart races with excitement, not fear, the moment a parachute opens.
Critics warn against judging every risk-taker as reckless, however. Many so-called Type T people take up creative or entrepreneurial paths instead of dangerous sports, channelling the same hunger for novelty into painting, invention or starting a business. Whether on a cliff edge or in a studio, it seems the same restless curiosity can drive very different kinds of lives.

Oil, Honour and Forty Springs
Every July, thousands of spectators travel to Edirne to watch one of the oldest sporting events in the world. Wrestlers, known as pehlivan, cover their bodies in olive oil and compete on open grass in leather trousers called a kispet. The tournament, known as Kırkpınar, has been held almost every year since 1924, making it a proud symbol of Turkish sporting heritage.
The event's name comes from an old legend. Two brothers are said to have wrestled each other for so long, and so evenly matched, that neither could win — until, exhausted, they both collapsed and died on the spot. According to the story, forty springs later bubbled up from the ground where they fell, giving the region its name: Kırkpınar, or 'Forty Springs'.
Beyond the oil and the crowds, Kırkpınar is built on respect. Wrestlers bow to their opponents before a match, and the strongest competitor, the başpehlivan, is expected to show humility, not arrogance. Similar values appear in other traditional Turkish sports, such as the horseback javelin game, where courage and fair play matter as much as winning.

KaanGood morning, everyone. Today I'm going to talk about a traditional Turkish sport called the javelin game, or cirit.
KaanCirit is played on horseback by two teams of riders who throw blunt wooden javelins at each other and try to score points.
KaanIt is especially popular at weddings and local festivals, where whole villages gather to watch.
KaanHistorically, the game had a serious purpose. It trained young men for combat, and it was even used to help settle disputes between villages.
KaanYou might think a sport like this causes serious injuries, but that isn't really true today. Modern rules and safety equipment mean it's mostly a cultural event now, not a dangerous competition.
KaanSo next time you hear about cirit, remember: it's not just a game, it's a living piece of Turkish history.
