What happens to the verb with he / she / it? How do we make it negative?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Use the cues to write true sentences about school routines. Look at the example first.
✓ Our school day starts at 8:30.
Mr Kaya teaches Maths.
We don't wear trainers with our uniform.
The bell rings every 40 minutes.
Does the canteen open at break time?
Students don't run in the corridor.
Write about your own school day. Say what time it starts, one lesson you have, and one thing you don't do at school.
We use the Simple Present for facts, timetables, and things that happen regularly at school. Add -s/-es with he/she/it. Negative: don't/doesn't + base verb. Question: Do/Does + subject + base verb?
TRSimple Present; okulda düzenli olarak olan şeyleri, ders programını ve gerçekleri anlatmak için kullanılır. He/she/it ile fiile -s/-es eklenir. Olumsuzda don't/doesn't + yalın fiil; soruda Do/Does başa gelir.
We use it to talk about the school timetable, class rules, and daily routines that don't change.
TRDers programını, sınıf kurallarını ve değişmeyen günlük rutinleri anlatırken kullanırız.
Add -s/-es to the verb with he/she/it.
TRhe/she/it ile fiile -s/-es eklenir.
Use doesn't with he/she/it, not don't.
TRHe/she/it ile doesn't kullanılır, don't değil.
Which words show something is forbidden? Which show something is necessary?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Use the cues to write school rules. Look at the example first.
✓ Students must wear a uniform.
You mustn't run in the corridor.
We have to hand in homework on time.
On Saturdays, we don't have to come to school.
Students must be respectful to teachers.
You mustn't use your phone in class.
Write three rules for your own class: one with must/have to, one with mustn't, and one with don't have to.
Must/have to show something is necessary or an obligation. Mustn't shows something is forbidden — do not do it. Don't have to shows there is no obligation — it is your choice.
TRMust/have to bir şeyin zorunlu olduğunu anlatır. Mustn't bir şeyin yasak olduğunu, yani yapılmaması gerektiğini anlatır. Don't have to ise zorunluluk olmadığını, seçim olduğunu anlatır.
We use these to talk about school rules: what students must do, what is forbidden, and what is optional.
TROkul kurallarını anlatırken kullanılır: öğrencilerin yapması gerekenler, yasak olanlar ve seçime bağlı olanlar.
Use mustn't for prohibition, not don't must.
TRYasak için mustn't kullanılır, don't must değil.
Don't add 'to' after must: must + base verb.
TRhave to'dan sonra 'to' fiil ile birlikte kullanılır ama must'tan sonra 'to' gelmez.
Mustn't (yasak, yapma!) ile don't have to (zorunlu değil, istersen yapma) karıştırılmamalı: 'You mustn't run' = koşmak yasak. 'You don't have to run' = koşmak zorunda değilsin, istersen yürü.
Which one comes from a rule (the school/a law)? Which one comes from the speaker's own decision?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Choose must or have to for each situation. Look at the example first.
✓ Students must wear a uniform. (school rule)
I have to tidy my room tonight. (mum's request)
You must switch off your phone. (exam rule)
I have to rest for two days. (doctor's advice)
Everyone must be quiet. (library rule)
Write two sentences about your own life: one about a rule at your school (use must) and one about something you personally need to do (use have to).
Must and have to both mean 'it is necessary', but must usually comes from the speaker, an official rule, or a law; have to usually comes from an outside obligation, like someone else's instruction. In everyday speech, they are often used the same way.
TRMust ve have to ikisi de 'zorunlu' anlamına gelir, ama must genellikle konuşan kişiden, resmî bir kuraldan ya da kanundan gelir; have to ise genellikle dışarıdan gelen bir zorunluluğu (başka birinin isteğini) anlatır. Günlük konuşmada çoğu zaman aynı şekilde kullanılırlar.
We choose must for official school rules and strong personal opinions; we choose have to for obligations that come from someone or something else.
TRResmî okul kuralları ve güçlü kişisel görüşler için must seçilir; başkasından ya da bir durumdan gelen zorunluluklar için have to seçilir.
Use must for an official rule, not has to.
TRResmî bir kural için must daha doğaldır.
Use have to for an obligation that comes from someone else.
TRBaşkasından gelen bir zorunluluk için have to kullanılır.
Must ve have to olumluda benzer anlama gelir, ama olumsuzları çok farklıdır: mustn't = yasak; don't have to = zorunlu değil. Bu ikisini karıştırmamak önemlidir.
How do we ask for permission politely? How do we say permission is not given?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Write a polite request or a permission question for each situation. Look at the example first.
✓ Can I go to the toilet, please?
Can you lend me a pen, please?
Can I open the window, please?
Yes, of course you can.
You can't use your phone in class.
Can you explain the homework to me, please?
Write a short mini-dialogue (3-4 lines) where a student asks for permission at school and the teacher answers.
We use Can I…? to politely ask for permission for ourselves, and Can you…? to politely ask someone to do something for us. The short answers are Yes, you can / No, you can't.
TRCan I…? kendimiz için nazikçe izin isterken kullanılır; Can you…? ise birinden bir şey yapmasını nazikçe rica ederken kullanılır. Kısa cevaplar Yes, you can / No, you can't şeklindedir.
We use this at school to ask a teacher for permission, or to ask a classmate for help politely.
TROkulda öğretmenden izin isterken ya da bir sınıf arkadaşından nazikçe yardım rica ederken kullanılır.
Don't use 'to' after can.
TRCan'dan sonra 'to' gelmez.
Use the base verb after can, not the -s form.
TRCan'dan sonra fiilin yalın hâli kullanılır.

My name is Mert and I'm a Year 10 student at an international school in İzmir. Our school day starts at 8:30, so I have to be punctual every morning. The caretaker, Mr Demir, opens the gate at 7:30, and by 8:25 the corridor is full of students.
At 8:30, we go to the assembly. The headteacher, Ms Whitfield, talks about the news of the week and important events, like sports day or a national day celebration. After assembly, we go to our classrooms.
We must wear a uniform, and we mustn't use our phones during lessons. If we have a problem, we can talk to the school counsellor, Mrs Aydoğan. She is very kind and always has time for students.
At break time, we go to the canteen or the library. The librarian, Mr Costa, helps us find books for our projects. We have to hand in our homework before 4 pm, so I usually work in the library after lessons.
I like my school because everyone is respectful, and there is always something interesting happening — a drama club, a football match, or a celebration for a national day!

Every year on the 29th of October, our school celebrates Republic Day. It is one of the most important national days in Türkiye, so we must prepare for it carefully.
In the morning, all students and teachers join a special assembly. We sing the national anthem, and the headteacher gives a short speech about the history of the day.
After the assembly, there is a school parade in the yard. Some students carry flags, and the drama club performs a short play about the celebration. Everyone claps for the performers!
In the afternoon, we don't have normal lessons. Instead, classes prepare posters and presentations about the day. My class made a poster with photos and facts, and we have to present it to the other students.
At the end of the day, there is a small prize-giving ceremony for the best posters. It's a busy day, but it's also one of my favourite days at school.

CounsellorWelcome to our school, Aylin! I'm Mrs Aydoğan, the school counsellor. Do you have any questions about the rules?

AylinOK. And can I use my phone during break time?
CounsellorYou can, but you mustn't use it during lessons. And you must switch it off during exams.

AylinThank you very much! Can I ask you questions again if I need to?
CounsellorOf course you can. My office is next to the library.
DenizSo, for the Republic Day show, we have to choose our roles. Can you be the narrator?
ElifSure, I can do that. What about the flag ceremony — who carries the flag?
DenizI think Mert must do it — he's very punctual and responsible.
ElifGood idea. And we mustn't forget the music! Can you ask the music teacher for help?
DenizYes, I can ask her today. We also have to write a short script for the play.
ElifI can write the first part. You don't have to write it alone — let's do it together after school.
DenizPerfect. Let's meet in the library at 4 pm — we have to hand in our plan to the headteacher by Friday.
ElifOK, see you there!
