Which verbs are regular (add -ed)? Which verbs are irregular? What form of 'be' do we use with 'we' and 'there'?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Use the cues to write example sentences about a neighbourhood or city visit. Look at the example first.
✓ We visited the city museum last month.
The park wasn't crowded yesterday.
I went to the new library on Saturday.
There was a lot of traffic this morning.
My parents took the bus to the shopping mall.
Did you enjoy the museum tour?
Write about a real or imagined visit to an attraction or service in your neighbourhood. Say where you went, what it was like, and one thing you did there.
We use the Simple Past for completed actions and states in the past. Regular verbs add -ed (visited, walked); irregular verbs have their own past form (go→went, have→had). The past of 'be' is was/were.
TRSimple Past; geçmişte tamamlanmış olayları ve durumları anlatmak için kullanılır. Düzenli fiillere -ed eklenir (visited, walked); düzensiz fiillerin ise kendine özgü bir geçmiş zaman biçimi vardır (go→went, have→had). Be fiilinin geçmiş hâli was/were'dir.
We use it to talk about places we visited in the past, what we did there, and what the situation was like (weather, crowds, etc.).
TRGeçmişte ziyaret ettiğimiz yerleri, yaptığımız şeyleri ve o anki durumu (hava, kalabalık vb.) anlatırken kullanılır.
The irregular past of 'have' is 'had', not 'have'.
TR'have' fiilinin düzensiz geçmiş hâli 'had'dir.
Use 'were' with a plural subject like 'many people'.
TRÇoğul özneyle 'were' kullanılır.
How do short adjectives change (big→bigger)? How do longer adjectives change (relaxing→more relaxing)?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Compare two places using the cues. Look at the example first.
✓ The new mall is bigger than the old shops.
The underground is faster than the bus.
The park is more relaxing than the city centre.
The library is quieter than the shopping mall.
The museum is more interesting than the old market.
Is the new hospital more modern than the old one?
Compare two places in your own neighbourhood or city (for example, two parks, two shops, or two ways of travelling).
For short (one-syllable) adjectives, we usually add -er (big→bigger). For adjectives ending in -y, we change y to i and add -er (busy→busier). For longer adjectives, we use more + adjective (relaxing→more relaxing). We use 'than' between the two things being compared.
TRSıfatları karşılaştırırken kısa sıfatlara (tek heceli) genellikle -er eklenir (big→bigger); -y ile bitenlerde y, i'ye döner ve -er eklenir (busy→busier). İki heceden uzun sıfatlarda more + sıfat kullanılır (relaxing→more relaxing). Karşılaştırılan iki şey arasında 'than' kullanılır.
We use this to compare two places, services, or types of transport in our city — which is bigger, faster, more relaxing, etc.
TRŞehrimizdeki iki yeri, hizmeti ya da ulaşım şeklini karşılaştırırken kullanılır: hangisi daha büyük, daha hızlı, daha rahat vb.
Don't use both -er and 'more' with a short adjective.
TRKısa sıfatlarda hem -er hem 'more' birlikte kullanılmaz.
Don't add -er to longer adjectives; use 'more' instead.
TRUzun sıfatlara -er eklenmez, 'more' kullanılır.
What does 'when' connect — two nouns or two actions/events? Can 'when' come at the start or in the middle of the sentence?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Join the two ideas with 'when'. Look at the example first.
✓ When I visited the museum, it was raining outside.
The bus was full when we arrived at the bus stop.
When I walked past the library, I saw my teacher.
When they got to the park, all the benches were taken.
When she visited the community centre, she met a lot of volunteers.
Write two sentences with 'when' about something that happened while you were visiting a place in your neighbourhood or city.
'When' links two past events, usually showing that one happened while or as the other did. 'When' can start the sentence or come in the middle; if it starts the sentence, we use a comma before the main clause.
TR'When' iki geçmiş olayı birbirine bağlar; genellikle biri diğeri olurken gerçekleşir. 'When' cümlenin başında ya da ortasında yer alabilir; başta ise, ana cümleden önce virgül kullanılır.
We use it to say that something else was happening or happened at the same time as a visit to a place or use of a service.
TRGeçmişte bir yeri ziyaret ederken ya da bir hizmetten yararlanırken aynı anda başka bir şeyin olduğunu anlatırken kullanılır.
Both verbs should be in the Simple Past when 'when' links two past events.
TR'When' geçmiş olayları bağlarken iki fiil de Simple Past olmalıdır.
No comma is needed when the 'when' clause comes after the main clause.
TR'When' cümle ortasındaysa virgüle gerek yoktur.
When the main sentence is positive, is the tag positive or negative? What happens when the main sentence is negative?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Add the correct question tag to each sentence. Look at the example first.
✓ You visited the new mall, didn't you?
The museum was closed on Monday, wasn't it?
They didn't take the bus, did they?
There weren't many seats, were there?
She went to the community centre, didn't she?
Write two sentences with question tags to check information about a place you and a partner both know.
A question tag depends on the main sentence: if the main sentence is positive, the tag is negative, and if it is negative, the tag is positive. In the Simple Past, we usually use did/didn't or was/were(n't).
TRQuestion tag, ana cümlenin türüne göre değişir: ana cümle olumluysa etiket olumsuz, ana cümle olumsuzsa etiket olumludur. Simple Past'te genellikle did/didn't ya da was/weren't kullanılır.
We use it to check information or keep a conversation going when talking about something that happened in the past.
TRBir bilgiyi doğrulamak ya da bir konuşmayı sürdürmek için geçmişte olan bir şeyi tekrar sorarken kullanılır.
If the main sentence is positive, the tag must be negative.
TRAna cümle olumluysa etiket olumsuz olmalıdır.
Use the verb only once in the tag.
TREtikette fiil yalnızca bir kez kullanılır.
Which verbs are followed by -ing (gerund)? Which verbs are followed by 'to' + verb (infinitive)?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Complete the sentences with the gerund (-ing) or infinitive (to + verb) form. Look at the example first.
✓ I enjoy visiting museums.
We decided to take the bus.
She loves shopping at the new mall.
They want to explore the old town.
I don't mind waiting for the bus.
Write two sentences about activities you enjoy doing or plan to do in your neighbourhood or city, using a gerund and an infinitive.
Some verbs are followed by the -ing form (gerund): enjoy, love, like, mind, finish. Other verbs are followed by to + verb (infinitive): want, decide, plan, hope, need.
TRBazı fiillerden sonra -ing (gerund) hâli gelir: enjoy, love, like, mind, finish. Bazı fiillerden sonra ise 'to' + fiil (infinitive) hâli gelir: want, decide, plan, hope, need.
We use this to talk about activities we enjoy doing, or things we plan or want to do in our city.
TRŞehrimizde yapmaktan hoşlandığımız etkinlikleri ya da yapmayı planladığımız şeyleri anlatırken kullanılır.
'Enjoy' is followed by the -ing form, not 'to'.
TR'Enjoy' fiilinden sonra -ing hâli gelir, 'to' değil.
'Decide' is followed by 'to' + verb.
TR'Decide' fiilinden sonra 'to' + fiil gelir.
Enjoy/love/like/mind gibi fiiller -ing alır; want/decide/plan/hope gibi fiiller 'to' + fiil alır. İkisini karıştırmamak gerekir.
Which prepositions tell us WHERE a place is? Which prepositions tell us WHEN something happens?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Complete the sentences with the correct preposition of place or time. Look at the example first.
✓ The museum is between the library and the park.
We met at the bus stop at 8:30.
The pharmacy is next to the supermarket.
The fire station is opposite the community centre.
The new mall is on River Street.
Describe where three places are in your own neighbourhood, using at least three different prepositions of place.
Prepositions of place describe where something is: between, opposite, next to, near. Prepositions of time describe when something happens: at (a specific time), on (a day or street name), in (a month, season, or city).
TRYer belirten edatlar bir yerin nerede olduğunu anlatır: between (arasında), opposite (karşısında), next to (yanında), near (yakınında). Zaman belirten edatlar ise bir şeyin ne zaman olduğunu anlatır: at (belirli saat), on (gün/cadde adı), in (ay/mevsim/şehir).
We use these to describe the location of places in our city and to say when a meeting or event happens.
TRŞehrimizdeki yerlerin konumunu tarif ederken ve bir buluşma ya da olayın zamanını söylerken kullanılır.
Use 'on' with street names, not 'in'.
TRCadde adlarında 'on' kullanılır, 'in' değil.
Use 'at' for a specific point like a bus stop.
TRBelirli bir nokta (durak) için 'at' kullanılır.
'Next to' ve 'near' benzer görünse de 'next to' bitişik konumu, 'near' ise genel bir yakınlığı anlatır: 'next to the supermarket' (hemen yanında) ile 'near the hospital' (hastaneye yakın bir yerde) karıştırılmamalıdır.

Özgün metin ve anlama soruları.
My name is Aslı, and last Saturday I visited the city centre with my family. We wanted to see some of the most popular attractions and recreational places in our city.
First, we went to Riverside Park, a large green area next to the river. It was much quieter than the busy streets near our house, and there was a lovely playground for my little brother. We sat on the grass and had a picnic before we walked around the lake.
After the park, we visited the City History Museum. It was more interesting than I expected! There were old photos of our city from a hundred years ago, and a friendly guide explained how the neighbourhood changed over time. My favourite part was the model of the old market square.
In the afternoon, we went to Central Mall, the biggest shopping centre in our city. It was more crowded than the museum, but it had a cinema, a food court, and dozens of shops. We watched a film and ate dinner there before we went home.
It was a great day. The park was more relaxing than the mall, but the museum taught me the most about my own city. Next time, I want to visit the old castle on the hill — I've heard it's even more beautiful than the museum.

On Saturday morning, Mr Kaya had a lot of errands to do in his neighbourhood. His daughter, Elif, decided to go with him and help.
Their first stop was the post office. Elif enjoyed posting a parcel to her cousin, and the clerk was very helpful. Next, they walked to the pharmacy to buy some medicine for Elif's grandmother. The pharmacy was smaller than the supermarket next door, but the pharmacist knew Elif's family well.
After that, Mr Kaya remembered that the library book was due back that day. They hurried to the library, which was busier than usual because of a children's story time. Elif loved choosing three new books before they left.
Their last stop was the community centre, where Elif's mother works as a volunteer. The centre offers free English classes, a food bank, and after-school clubs for children. Mr Kaya and Elif helped set up chairs for an evening meeting before they walked home.
By midday, Elif understood why her father always says that good services make a neighbourhood a better place to live. She started thinking about which services she wanted to include in her class project about their city.
