In Theme 2, you will meet classmates at a new school, learn about friendship, and talk about daily and study routines and habits. You will learn to describe routines and habits with the Simple Present Tense (I wake up / she revises), and to use time expressions (every day, often, usually) and adverbs of manner (slowly, quickly, carefully) to say how and when you do things.

Which sentences are about 'I/we' and which are about 'he/she'? What changes on the verb with he/she? How is the negative different for he/she?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Use the cues to write true sentences about routines. Look at the example first.
✓ I wake up at seven.
Zeynep revises her notes every evening.
We don't have breakfast together.
He doesn't plan his homework early.
My classmates repeat new words in class.
Emir doesn't hand in his homework late.
Write four sentences about your own daily or study routine: two affirmative and two negative.
We use the Simple Present Tense to talk about daily and study routines and habits. Use the base verb with I/you/we/they, and add -s/-es with he/she/it. Negative: don't (I/you/we/they), doesn't (he/she/it) + base verb.
TRSimple Present Tense, günlük ve çalışma rutinlerini, alışkanlıkları anlatmak için kullanılır. I/you/we/they ile fiilin yalın hâli, he/she/it ile fiile -s/-es eklenir. Olumsuzda I/you/we/they ile 'don't', he/she/it ile 'doesn't' kullanılır.
We use this to talk about things we do every day or regularly — our daily and study routines and habits.
TRHer gün ya da düzenli olarak yaptığımız şeyleri; günlük ve çalışma rutinlerimizi, alışkanlıklarımızı anlatırken kullanırız.
Add -s/-es to the verb with he/she/it.
TRHe/she/it ile fiile -s/-es eklenir.
Use 'doesn't' with he/she/it, not 'don't'.
TRHe/she/it olumsuzda 'doesn't' kullanılır, 'don't' değil.
Which word starts a question about I/you/we/they, and which about he/she/it? Where do 'always' and 'never' go in the sentence? Where do 'carefully' and 'slowly' go?
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done! You found the rule yourself. Now let's use it.
Use the cues to write sentences with questions, time expressions or adverbs of manner. Look at the example first.
✓ Do you usually hand in your homework on time?
Does Emir take notes quickly?
I always comb my hair before school.
She listens carefully in class.
He writes slowly but neatly.
Do your classmates often revise together?
Write three sentences: one question with Do/Does, one with an adverb of frequency, and one with an adverb of manner.
In Simple Present questions, use Do with I/you/we/they and Does with he/she/it, and keep the base verb. Adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often, sometimes, never) go before the main verb; adverbs of manner (quickly, slowly, carefully) usually go after the verb or object.
TRŞimdiki zaman sorularında I/you/we/they ile 'Do', he/she/it ile 'Does' kullanılır ve fiil yalın hâlde kalır. Sıklık zarfları (always, usually, often, sometimes, never) ana fiilden önce; tarz zarfları (quickly, slowly, carefully) genellikle fiilden (veya nesneden) sonra gelir.
We use this to ask questions about routines, and to say how often (frequency) or how (manner) we do something.
TRRutinler hakkında soru sorarken, bir şeyi ne sıklıkla yaptığımızı (sıklık zarfı) ve nasıl yaptığımızı (tarz zarfı) anlatırken kullanırız.
Put Do/Does before the subject in a question.
TRSoruda 'Do/Does' özneden önce gelir.
Adverbs of manner end in -ly: carefully, quickly, slowly.
TRTarz zarfı '-ly' ile biter: carefully, quickly, slowly.

My name is Emir, and today I have a new classmate — his name is Kerem, and he sits next to me in Room 9B. At first, we don't talk much, but at break time, Kerem asks me about my daily routine, and we quickly become friends.
I tell him about my typical school day. I wake up at half past six, get dressed quickly, and have a fast breakfast with my family. I check my timetable every morning before I leave the house, so I never forget my books.
Kerem laughs and says his morning routine is very different. He wakes up early too, but he doesn't have breakfast at home — he usually has it at school, at break time, with his new classmates. He combs his hair carefully and always plans his school bag the night before.
In class, Kerem takes notes quickly, but he also listens carefully to the teacher. I write more slowly, but I revise my notes every evening, and that habit helps me remember new words. We both hand in our homework on time, and our teacher says that's an excellent habit for a good student.
By the end of the day, Kerem and I aren't strangers any more — we're friends. Our friendship starts with a simple conversation about daily routines, but I think it's going to be a strong one.

My classmate Zeynep always has the best grades in our class, so one day I ask her about her study routine. She smiles and says it isn't a secret — she just has good habits.
Zeynep gets home from school at half past three, and she doesn't start studying immediately. First, she has a snack and rests for twenty minutes. Then she checks her timetable for tomorrow and plans her homework carefully.
She revises her notes every evening, usually for about forty-five minutes. She reads slowly and takes notes as she reads, because she says that helps her remember new information. She never leaves her homework until the last minute — she always hands it in early.
I ask her if studying every day is difficult, and she says no, because she does it in small steps, not all at once. On test days, she often repeats key vocabulary quietly to herself on the bus to school.
After we talk, I decide to try Zeynep's study routine myself. I don't become a perfect student overnight, but slowly, my new habits start to work — and my classmate Zeynep is happy to help me along the way.

EmirHey, Kerem! What time do you usually wake up on school days?
KeremI wake up at quarter to seven. I get dressed quickly and check my timetable.
EmirDo you have breakfast at home?
KeremNo, I don't. I usually have it at school with my classmates, at break time.
EmirThat's different from me — I have breakfast at home every day. Do you comb your hair before or after breakfast?
KeremBefore! I always comb my hair carefully before I leave the house.
EmirSame here. Does your family plan your school bag together?
KeremNo, I plan it myself, the night before. It's a good habit — I never forget my books now.
ZeynepDo you want to revise together this evening? We have a vocabulary test tomorrow.
DenizGood idea! What time do you usually start studying?
ZeynepI usually start at about five, after I rest for twenty minutes. Does that work for you?
DenizYes, it does. Do we repeat the vocabulary together, or do we work alone first?
ZeynepLet's take notes alone first, then repeat the words together and check each other carefully.
DenizSounds good. Do you always study this carefully before a test?
ZeynepYes, I do — it's a habit now. It doesn't feel difficult any more.
DenizGreat, let's plan to meet at your house at five o'clock, then.

Öğrendiklerini konuşarak ve yazarak kullan.
Think of a daily or study habit (real or invented, for creative-writing purposes). Walk around the class and answer your classmates' yes/no questions with Do/Does so they can guess your habit. Then guess theirs.
Interview a partner about their daily routine and study habits: wake-up time, breakfast, homework routine, and how they revise. Take notes, then prepare to present your partner to the class.
Write a short paragraph about your own daily or study routine (or an invented one, for creative-writing purposes). Include what time you wake up, at least three things you usually do, and one habit you never or always do.
Imagine a new classmate is joining your class (real or invented, for creative-writing purposes). Write a friendly message describing the school routine and giving them advice about how things usually work.
