Simple Present and Present Progressive for the Future
- Our English exam starts at nine o'clock on Monday.
- I am revising Chemistry with Elif this evening.
- The new term begins next Monday, according to the school calendar.
- We are trying a new study app next week — the teacher already booked the tablets.
Which sentences describe a fixed timetable or schedule, and which describe a personal plan or arrangement someone has already made?
A Complete the rule
Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Well done — you've worked out how English talks about the future!
B Build sentences
Use the cues to build true future sentences. Choose Simple Present or Present Progressive.
- the exam start at nine
✓ The exam starts at nine.
- the new term begin on Monday
Model answer
The new term begins on Monday.
- I meet my study group tomorrow (arranged)
Model answer
I am meeting my study group tomorrow.
- the library close at five every day
Model answer
The library closes at five every day.
- we try a new app next week (arranged)
Model answer
We are trying a new app next week.
- ? / the term end before the holidays
Model answer
Does the term end before the holidays?
C Your turn
Write four sentences about your own week: one school timetable fact, one personal study arrangement, and two more future plans using Simple Present or Present Progressive.
We use the Simple Present for future events fixed by a timetable, programme or official calendar. We use the Present Progressive for a personal future arrangement that has already been planned.
TRSabit bir program, ders programı ya da resmi takvime göre gerçekleşecek gelecek olaylar için Simple Present kullanılır. Kişisel olarak önceden planlanmış bir gelecek etkinlik için ise Present Progressive kullanılır.
Use the Simple Present for exam dates, timetables and the school calendar; use the Present Progressive for personal arrangements, like studying with a friend.
TRSınav tarihlerini, ders programını ya da okul takvimini anlatırken Simple Present; bir arkadaşla ders çalışma planı gibi kişisel düzenlemelerden bahsederken Present Progressive kullanırız.
Positive
- The exam starts at nine.
- I am revising with Elif tonight.
Negative
- The library doesn't close early on Fridays.
- We aren't meeting today — it's cancelled.
Question
- Does the new term begin on Monday?
- Are you studying with your group tomorrow?
Short answers
- Yes, it does. / No, it doesn't.
- Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
- I am revising Chemistry every Tuesday.I revise Chemistry every Tuesday.
A repeated routine takes the Simple Present, not the Progressive, because it isn't a one-off arrangement.
TRDüzenli tekrar eden bir alışkanlık için Simple Present kullanılır, kişisel geçici bir düzenleme değildir.
- The exam is starting at nine every year. The exam starts at nine every year.
A fixed programme or rule uses the Simple Present.
TRSabit bir program/kural anlatılıyorsa Simple Present kullanılır.
- Does you meeting your study group tomorrow? Are you meeting your study group tomorrow?
Present Progressive questions use 'be', not 'does'.
TRPresent Progressive sorularında 'be' fiili kullanılır, 'does' değil.
| Simple Present (timetable) | Present Progressive (arrangement) | |
|---|---|---|
| Use | Fixed timetables, programmes, calendarsThe exam starts at nine. | Personal plans already arrangedI'm meeting my study group at five. |
| Form | base verb (+s/es)Term begins on Monday. | am/is/are + verb-ingWe are trying a new app next week. |
| Time words | on Monday, every term, according to the calendar | tomorrow, this evening, next week (already planned)I'm revising this evening. |

Present Progressive with 'always' + Question Tags
- My desk mate is always asking me for a pen — it's a bit annoying!
- You always do your homework early, don't you?
- She is always forgetting her textbook, isn't she?
- We aren't having a test this week, are we?
In the first and third sentences, does 'always' describe a neutral habit or something that annoys the speaker? How are the question tags formed after each type of sentence?
A Complete the rule
Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Great — you've noticed both patterns!
B Build sentences
Complete each sentence, then add the correct tag where shown.
- he always / lose his notes (annoying) tag?
✓ He is always losing his notes, isn't he?
- she always / interrupt the teacher (annoying)
Model answer
She is always interrupting the teacher.
- you do your homework early tag?
Model answer
You do your homework early, don't you?
- they aren't preparing for the quiz tag?
Model answer
They aren't preparing for the quiz, are they?
- our teacher always / give extra examples (positive habit)
Model answer
Our teacher always gives extra examples.
- you always / check your phone in class (annoying) tag?
Model answer
You are always checking your phone in class, aren't you?
C Your turn
Write three sentences: one complaint using Present Progressive + always, and two statements with question tags about your classmates' study habits.
Present Progressive + always describes a frequent habit that annoys or surprises the speaker (different from a neutral habit with Simple Present). A question tag adds a negative tag to a positive statement and a positive tag to a negative statement, repeating the same auxiliary/be verb.
TR'Always' ile Present Progressive kullanıldığında, sık tekrar eden ve genellikle konuşanı rahatsız eden ya da şaşırtan bir alışkanlığı anlatır (nötr bir alışkanlıktan farklıdır). Question tag ise olumlu cümleye olumsuz, olumsuz cümleye olumlu bir kısa soru ekler; yardımcı fiil ana cümledekiyle aynı olur.
Use always + -ing to complain about a classmate's repeated, annoying behaviour; use question tags to confirm information or keep a conversation going.
TRBir arkadaşının sürekli tekrar eden ve seni rahatsız eden bir davranışından şikayet ederken 'always + -ing' kullanırız; bir bilgiyi teyit etmek istediğimizde question tag ekleriz.
Positive
- She is always forgetting her textbook.
- You always finish early, don't you?
Negative
- We aren't having a test this week, are we?
Question
- Is he always losing his pen?
Short answers
- Yes, he is. / No, he isn't.
- Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
- He always is losing his notes. He is always losing his notes.
In the Present Progressive, 'always' comes after 'be' and before the main verb.
TRPresent Progressive'de 'always' be fiilinden SONRA, ana fiilden ÖNCE gelir.
- She teaches Maths, doesn't teach she?She teaches Maths, doesn't she?
The tag only repeats the auxiliary + subject, never the main verb.
TRTag'da ana fiil tekrar edilmez, sadece yardımcı fiil + özne kullanılır.
Compare: 'She often checks her notes' (neutral habit, no criticism) vs 'She's always checking her notes in class!' (Present Progressive + always → sounds annoyed or surprised, even though the meaning is similar).
Adverbs from Adjectives (Regular and Irregular)
- Ali answered the question quickly and confidently.
- She always works hard in Chemistry, and she speaks English fluently too.
- He did well in the presentation, although he felt nervous.
- The teacher explained the new topic clearly, so we understood it easily.
Which words describe HOW someone does something? What happens to the adjective 'easy' when it becomes an adverb — and which adverb here does NOT end in -ly?
A Complete the rule
Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Excellent — you've cracked the adverb patterns!
B Build sentences
Change the adjective in brackets into the correct adverb.
- She explained the rule. (clear)
✓ She explained the rule clearly.
- He answered every question. (confident)
Model answer
He answered every question confidently.
- They finished the project. (easy)
Model answer
They finished the project easily.
- Our teacher speaks very ___ when she's excited. (fast)
Model answer
Our teacher speaks very fast when she's excited.
- I did ___ in the vocabulary quiz. (good)
Model answer
I did well in the vocabulary quiz.
- She always studies ___ before exams. (hard)
Model answer
She always studies hard before exams.
C Your turn
Write four sentences about how you or your classmates do things at school, using at least four different adverbs (regular and irregular).
Most adjectives add -ly to become adverbs (quick→quickly). Adjectives ending in -y change to -ily (easy→easily). Some adjectives keep the same form as adverbs (hard, fast, late). 'Good' has an irregular adverb: well.
TRÇoğu sıfat sonuna -ly eklenerek zarf olur (quick→quickly). -y ile biten sıfatlarda y, i'ye dönüşür ve -ly eklenir (easy→easily). Bazı sıfatlar zarf olarak da aynı kalır (hard, fast, late). 'Good' sıfatının zarfı düzensizdir: well.
We use adverbs to describe HOW an action is done — how someone answered a question, gave a presentation, or completed a task.
TRBir eylemin NASIL yapıldığını anlatırken (bir sunumu nasıl yaptın, bir soruyu nasıl cevapladın gibi) zarf kullanırız.
Positive
- She explained it clearly.
- He did well in the test.
Negative
- He didn't answer confidently.
- She doesn't study regularly.
Question
- How did you do in the quiz?
- Does she always work hard?
Short answers
- Very well. / Not very well.
- Yes, she does.
- He did the presentation good.He did the presentation well.
'Good' is an adjective; to describe how an action is done, use the adverb 'well'.
TR'Good' sıfattır; fiili nitelemek için 'well' zarfı gerekir.
- She answered very quick. She answered very quickly.
To describe how she answered (a verb), you need the adverb quickly, not the adjective quick.
TRFiili nitelemek için zarf (quickly) gerekir, sıfat (quick) değil.
- He studies hardly for every test.He studies hard for every test.
'Hardly' means 'barely'; to say someone works with effort, use 'hard', not 'hardly'.
TR'Hardly' 'neredeyse hiç' demektir; 'çok çalışmak' için 'hard' kullanılır.
Compare: 'a hard question' (adjective, describes the noun 'question') vs 'She studies hard' (adverb, describes the verb 'studies') — same spelling, different job in the sentence.
Adjectives: -ed vs -ing
- I'm really interested in Biology — the topics are so interesting.
- This maths problem is confusing; I feel completely confused.
- The new coding club sounds exciting — I'm so excited to join!
- Some students feel bored in long lectures because the teacher's style is boring.
Which adjectives describe a PERSON'S feeling, and which describe the THING or SITUATION that causes that feeling?
A Complete the rule
Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Perfect — you've found the difference!
B Build sentences
Complete each sentence with the -ed or -ing form of the adjective.
- This lesson is really ___. (interest)
✓ This lesson is really interesting.
- I feel ___ by this grammar rule. (confuse)
Model answer
I feel confused by this grammar rule.
- The science experiment was ___. (amaze)
Model answer
The science experiment was amazing.
- She was ___ by the long lecture. (bore)
Model answer
She was bored by the long lecture.
- Our new study app is ___ — everyone loves it. (excite)
Model answer
Our new study app is exciting — everyone loves it.
C Your turn
Write three sentences about your school subjects or study tools using -ed and -ing adjectives (e.g. interested/interesting, bored/boring, excited/exciting).
Adjectives ending in -ed describe how a person feels (I am interested). Adjectives ending in -ing describe the thing or situation that causes that feeling (The topic is interesting).
TR-ed ile biten sıfatlar, bir kişinin hissettiği duyguyu anlatır (I am interested = ilgileniyorum). -ing ile biten sıfatlar ise o duyguya sebep olan şeyi ya da durumu anlatır (The topic is interesting = konu ilgi çekici).
Choosing correctly between -ed and -ing matters when you describe how a lesson, topic or tool affects you.
TRBir dersten, konudan ya da araçtan nasıl etkilendiğini anlatırken -ed/-ing sıfatlarını doğru seçmek önemlidir.
Positive
- I'm interested in Biology.
- Biology is interesting.
Negative
- I'm not bored in this class.
- This class isn't boring.
Question
- Are you interested in coding?
- Is the topic confusing?
Short answers
- Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
- Yes, it is. / No, it isn't.
- I am boring in long lessons.I am bored in long lessons.
To describe how a person feels, use the -ed adjective.
TRKişinin hissettiği duygu için -ed sıfatı gerekir.
- This topic is very interested. This topic is very interesting.
The topic itself causes interest, so it needs the -ing adjective.
TRKonunun kendisi ilgi çekici olduğu için -ing sıfatı gerekir.
| -ed (the person's feeling) | -ing (the cause) | |
|---|---|---|
| Describes | How a person feelsI am interested in Physics. | The thing/situation that causes the feelingPhysics is interesting. |
| Typical subject | I, you, she, we (people)We were amazed by the science show. | it, this topic, the lesson (things/situations)The science show was amazing. |
| Common pairs | bored, excited, confused, amazed | boring, exciting, confusing, amazing |
| Question | Are you interested in…?Are you interested in coding? | Is … interesting? Is the new app interesting? |
Correlative Conjunctions (either…or / neither…nor) and Elliptical Responses
- You can choose either Art or Music as your elective this term.
- Neither Ali nor his desk mate finished the group project on time.
- A: I really enjoy Biology. B: So do I.
- A: I don't like early morning lessons. B: Neither do I.
How do 'either…or' and 'neither…nor' connect two choices? Do the short replies 'So do I' and 'Neither do I' repeat the whole sentence, or just agree/disagree briefly?
A Complete the rule
Complete the rule with the words in the box.
Great work — these short forms make your English sound much more natural!
B Build sentences
Combine the ideas using either…or / neither…nor, or write a short elliptical response.
- You can study Chemistry. You can study Physics. (choice)
✓ You can study either Chemistry or Physics.
- Ali didn't finish the project. His partner didn't finish it either.
Model answer
Neither Ali nor his partner finished the project.
- Choose Art. Choose Music. (elective choice)
Model answer
You can choose either Art or Music.
- A: I love group projects. B: (agree, positive)
Model answer
So do I.
- A: I can't concentrate in noisy classrooms. B: (agree, negative)
Model answer
Neither can I.
C Your turn
Write two sentences using either…or or neither…nor about your school subjects, and two short elliptical replies (So do I / Neither do I / So am I / Neither am I) agreeing with a partner's opinion.
'Either… or…' expresses a choice between two positive options. 'Neither… nor…' shows that two things are both not true (the verb stays positive because the negative idea is already in neither/nor). Elliptical short responses use 'So + auxiliary + subject' to agree with a positive statement, and 'Neither/Nor + auxiliary + subject' to agree with a negative one, instead of repeating the whole sentence.
TR'Either… or…' iki olumlu seçenekten birini ifade eder. 'Neither… nor…' ise iki şeyin de doğru/mevcut olmadığını anlatır (fiil olumlu formda kalır çünkü olumsuzluk zaten neither/nor'da vardır). Elliptical (kısa) yanıtlar, bir cümleyi tekrar etmek yerine 'So + yardımcı fiil + özne' (olumlu katılım) ya da 'Neither/Nor + yardımcı fiil + özne' (olumsuz katılım) ile aynı fikirde olduğumuzu kısaca gösterir.
Use these structures to present two options (either…or), to say two things are both not true (neither…nor), or to briefly agree with what someone just said (So do I / Neither do I).
TRİki seçenek sunarken (either…or), iki şeyin de doğru/mevcut olmadığını belirtirken (neither…nor), ya da bir arkadaşının söylediğine kısaca katılırken (So do I / Neither do I) bu yapıları kullanırız.
Positive
- You can choose either Art or Music.
- So do I. / So am I.
Negative
- Neither Ali nor his partner finished the project.
Question
- Would you rather study either subject?
Short answers
- Either is fine. / So do I.
- Neither, thanks. / Neither am I.
- Neither Ali or his partner finished it.Neither Ali nor his partner finished it.
'Neither' pairs with 'nor', not 'or'.
TR'Neither' ile 'nor' birlikte kullanılır, 'or' ile değil.
- A: I love group projects. B: So I do.B: So do I.
In the elliptical response, the auxiliary comes before the subject: So + do/am/is/are + subject.
TRElliptical yanıtta yardımcı fiil özneden ÖNCE gelir: So + do/am/is/are + özne.
- A: I can't concentrate here. B: Neither I can.B: Neither can I.
Again, the auxiliary comes before the subject: Neither + can + I.
TRAynı şekilde, yardımcı fiil özneden önce gelir.
| Either…or | Neither…nor | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | one of two positive choicesYou can take either Art or Drama. | both things are not trueNeither Ali nor Zeynep finished early. |
| Verb form | positive verbEither book works for revision. | positive verb (the negative is already in neither/nor)Neither answer is correct. |
| Short agreement | So + aux + subject (positive agreement)A: I like Biology. B: So do I. | Neither/Nor + aux + subject (negative agreement)A: I don't like tests. B: Neither do I. |

- Look at the title. What do you think Deniz's and Mira's favourite subjects will be, and why might they like them?
- What is your own favourite subject, and what kind of learning activities does it usually involve?
Two Students, Two Favourite Subjects
Deniz has always loved Biology. Every week, her class does at least one hands-on activity — dissecting a flower, growing bacteria in a petri dish, or building a model of a cell. 'I remember facts much better when I've actually done something with my hands,' she explains. 'If a teacher just talks for forty minutes, I switch off after ten.' Deniz also keeps a set of flashcards with labelled diagrams, which she reviews for ten minutes every evening rather than cramming before a test.
Mira, on the other hand, is far more excited by Coding, an elective course she chose in Year 9. She enjoys the logical, step-by-step nature of writing a programme, and she likes that mistakes are simply part of the process — a wrong line of code just produces an error message, not a bad grade. Mira mostly studies using online tutorials and a mind-mapping app, which helps her see how different commands connect to each other before she starts typing.
Although Deniz and Mira are interested in completely different subjects, their stories share an important lesson: a subject feels enjoyable when the learning activities match the way a person naturally thinks. Some students learn best by doing, others by connecting ideas visually, and others by listening and discussing. Recognising your own learning style — and choosing study tools that fit it — can turn even a difficult subject into one you look forward to.

A Guide to Smart Study Tools
Walk into almost any classroom today and you will find a mix of old and new study tools working side by side. Alongside the familiar exercise book and paper textbook, many students now use a digital textbook that highlights key vocabulary automatically, or a flashcard app that shows them a word again just before they are likely to forget it. Teachers, too, increasingly rely on an interactive whiteboard to display diagrams, videos and quizzes that the whole class can respond to together.
One especially useful innovation is spaced repetition, the method behind many flashcard apps. Instead of reviewing everything the night before a test, students see each fact several times over a period of days or weeks, with longer gaps between each review. Research suggests that this approach helps information move from short-term to long-term memory far more effectively than last-minute cramming. Mind maps work on a similar principle: by connecting ideas visually, they make it easier to recall a whole topic rather than isolated facts.
However, no tool can replace regular practice and genuine understanding. A flashcard app can help you memorise vocabulary, but it cannot teach you to write a full paragraph; an interactive whiteboard can make a lesson more engaging, but students still need to take notes and think for themselves. The most effective students are usually not the ones with the most expensive gadgets, but the ones who choose a small number of tools that suit their own learning style and use them consistently.
