Quick Understanding

Would rather (kısaca 'd rather), iki seçenek arasından birini tercih ettiğimizi anlatır — "...mek/mak yerine ...meyi/mayı tercih ederim" demektir. Kendi yaptığımız bir şey için fiilin yalın hâlini alır, ama başka birinin bir şey yapmasını tercih ettiğimizde şaşırtıcı bir şekilde past simple kullanılır (geçmiş zaman anlamı yoktur!). would prefer ise aynı anlamı to-infinitive ile verir.

Formula

Aynı özne: Subject + would rather (+ not) + V1 (+ than + V1)
Farklı özne: Subject1 + would rather + Subject2 + Past Simple
Eşdeğer yapı: Subject + would prefer + to + V1
would rather + past simple'daki past simple GEÇMİŞ ZAMAN anlatmaz — sadece "farklı özne" durumunda kullanılan sabit bir kalıptır (unreal/distancing past, tıpkı ikinci koşul cümlelerindeki gibi).

Word Order

would rather — (özne, farklı ise) — fiil (V1 ya da past simple) — than + karşılaştırma (isteğe bağlı). would prefer'da ise to-infinitive kullanılır ve karşılaştırma "rather than + V1" ile yapılır.

  • I'd rather stay in tonight than go to the party.Bu gece partiye gitmektense evde kalmayı tercih ederim.
  • I'd rather you didn't tell anyone about this.Bunu kimseye söylememeni tercih ederim.

How It Works

When do we use it?

  • would rather + bare infinitive (aynı özne): kendi tercihini anlatmak için — I'd rather walk than drive.
  • would rather + özne + past simple (farklı özne): başkasının bir şey yapmasını tercih ettiğini anlatmak için — I'd rather you called me tomorrow.
  • would prefer + to-infinitive: would rather ile aynı anlam, farklı yapı — I would prefer to stay home.
  • would rather not: bir şeyi yapmamayı tercih ettiğini belirtmek için — I'd rather not talk about it.

When DON'T we use it?

would rather'dan sonra to-infinitive KULLANMA — bu hata would prefer ile karıştırmaktan gelir.
❌ I'd rather to stay home. → ✅ I'd rather stay home. (ya da: I'd prefer to stay home.)
Farklı özne olduğunda bare infinitive KULLANMA — başkasının yapmasını istediğinde past simple gerekir.
❌ I'd rather you stay quiet. → ✅ I'd rather you stayed quiet.

Short Answers

Kısa cevap would ile verilir: "Would you rather stay home?" → "Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't."
Karşılaştırmalı bir soruda (A or B) genelde tercih doğrudan tekrar edilir: "I'd rather stay home."

would rather

Bare infinitive alır (aynı özne); farklı özne için past simple kullanır. Daha konuşma diline yakındır.

I'd rather leave early.

VS

would prefer

Her zaman to-infinitive alır; özne değişse bile yapı aynı kalır ama farklı özneli kullanım için "would prefer + object + to + V1" gerekir.

I would prefer to leave early.

Notice: İki şeyi karşılaştırırken

would rather … than … ve would prefer … to … farklı bağlaç alır:
I'd rather have tea than coffee. — I'd prefer tea to coffee.
Fiillerle would prefer kullanırken rather than gelir: I'd prefer to walk rather than take a taxi.

Common Mistakes

❌ I'd rather to stay home tonight.
✅ I'd rather stay home tonight.
WHY? would rather doğrudan fiilin yalın hâlini alır, to almaz — "to" yalnızca would prefer ile kullanılır.
❌ I'd rather you stay for dinner.
✅ I'd rather you stayed for dinner.
WHY? Özne farklı olduğunda (I ... you) fiil bare infinitive değil, past simple formunda olmalıdır — bu kalıbın en çok karıştırılan kuralıdır.
❌ I'd rather don't go today.
✅ I'd rather not go today.
WHY? Aynı öznede olumsuzluk "don't/doesn't" ile değil, doğrudan "rather NOT" ile yapılır.
❌ I would prefer stay home.
✅ I would prefer to stay home.
WHY? would prefer, would rather'ın tersine mutlaka to-infinitive alır — "to"yu düşürmek would rather kalıbıyla karıştırmaktan kaynaklanır.
❌ "I'd rather you stayed" cümlesi geçmişte kaldığını anlatır.
✅ Bu cümledeki past simple (stayed) şimdiki/gelecekteki bir tercihi anlatır, geçmiş zaman DEĞİLDİR.
WHY? Farklı özne olduğunda kullanılan past simple, ikinci koşul cümlelerindeki (if I were you gibi) "unreal past" mantığıyla aynıdır — zaman değil, kalıp gereğidir.

Özne aynıysa fiilin yalın hâli (V1) gelir ve "to" kullanılmaz: I'd rather stay at home. Başka birinin yapmasını istiyorsan would rather + özne + past simple kullanılır: I'd rather you stayed at home.

Would rather ile would prefer arasındaki fark nedir?

Anlam aynıdır; fark yapıdadır. would rather + V1 (I'd rather walk), would prefer + to + V1 (I'd prefer to walk). Karşılaştırmada would rather ile "than", would prefer + isim ile "to" kullanılır: I'd prefer tea to coffee.

"I'd rather you stayed" cümlesi neden geçmiş zamanda?

Buradaki past simple geçmişi anlatmaz; şimdi ya da gelecek için bir tercihi anlatır (unreal past). Amerikan İngilizcesinin gündelik kullanımında "I'd rather you stay" da duyulabilir, ama standart kullanımda ve sınavlarda doğru kabul edilen biçim past simple'dır: I'd rather you stayed.

Would rather ile olumsuz cümle nasıl kurulur?

Aynı öznede "not" doğrudan rather'dan sonra gelir: I'd rather not go. Farklı öznede past simple'ın olumsuzu kullanılır: I'd rather you didn't go.
