C Your turn

Write about an outdoor activity you remember. Say what you were doing at a certain time, and one thing you weren't doing.

At … o'clock, I was …We were …I wasn't …It was/wasn't …
Rule

We use the Past Progressive (was/were + verb-ing) to talk about an action that was in progress at a specific moment in the past. It shows what was happening 'at that time'.

When?

We use it to describe what was happening in nature at a certain moment, for example what we were doing when the storm started.

3 · Form

Positive

  • We were hiking along the trail.
  • The birds were singing.

Negative

  • It wasn't raining.
  • We weren't sleeping.

Question

  • Were you camping near the river?
  • Was it raining when you left?

Short answers

  • Yes, we were. / No, we weren't.
  • Yes, it was. / No, it wasn't.
Mistakes
  • We were hike along the trail. We were hiking along the trail.

Always add -ing to the verb in the Past Progressive.

TRPast Progressive'de fiile mutlaka -ing eklenir.

  • She was sleep when the storm started. She was sleeping when the storm started.

Use the -ing form after was/were, not the base verb.

TRwas/were'den sonra fiilin -ing hali gelir, yalın hali değil.

Past Progressive vs Simple Past: interrupted actions

1 · Notice
  • We were walking along the trail when we saw a deer.
  • The rain started while we were setting up the tent.
  • I was reading my compass when my friend called me.
  • Lightning struck a tree while we were hiding under the rocks.

Which action was already in progress (longer)? Which action interrupted it (shorter, sudden)?

2 · Discover

A Complete the rule

Look at the Notice sentences again. Complete the rule with the words in the box.

B Build sentences

Combine the two actions into one sentence with when or while. Look at the example first.

  1. we / walk along the trail we / see a deer

✓ We were walking along the trail when we saw a deer.

  2. the rain / start we / set up the tent
    Model answer

The rain started while we were setting up the tent.

  3. I / read my compass my friend / call me
    Model answer

I was reading my compass when my friend called me.

  4. lightning / strike a tree we / hide under the rocks
    Model answer

Lightning struck a tree while we were hiding under the rocks.

  5. we / cross the river the storm / begin
    Model answer

We were crossing the river when the storm began.

C Your turn

Write two sentences about something that happened while you were doing an outdoor activity. Use when or while.

I was … when …While we were …, …
Rule

When one action was in progress and a second, shorter action interrupted it, we use the Past Progressive for the longer action and the Simple Past for the shorter one. 'When' usually goes before the shorter action, and 'while' before the longer one.

TRBir eylem geçmişte devam ederken başka bir eylem onu kesintiye uğratırsa, uzun süren eylem için Past Progressive, kısa/ani eylem için Simple Past kullanılır. 'When' genellikle kısa eylemden önce, 'while' ise uzun eylemden önce gelir.

When?

We use it to say that something suddenly happened while we were doing an outdoor activity, for example seeing a deer while we were hiking.

TRDoğada bir aktivite sürerken aniden başka bir şeyin olduğunu anlatırken (örneğin yürüyüş yaparken bir geyik gördük) kullanılır.

3 · Form

Positive

  • We were walking when we saw a deer.
  • The storm started while we were camping.

Negative

  • We weren't sleeping when the storm started.
  • It wasn't raining when we left.

Question

  • What were you doing when the storm started?
  • Were you hiking when it began to rain?

Short answers

  • I was reading a map.
  • Yes, we were.
Mistakes
  • We walked along the trail when we were seeing a deer.We were walking along the trail when we saw a deer.

The longer action needs the Past Progressive; the short, sudden action needs the Simple Past.

TRUzun eylem Past Progressive, kısa/ani eylem Simple Past olmalı.

  • While we were setting up the tent, the rain was starting. While we were setting up the tent, the rain started.

Use the Simple Past for the sudden, short action, not the Past Progressive.

Compare

Simple Past tek başına tamamlanmış, sıralı olayları anlatır (First we hiked, then we ate). We were hiking when it started to rain).

C Your turn

Write two sentences about something you could or couldn't do outdoors when you were younger.

When I was younger, I could …I couldn't …
Rule

Could is used to talk about a general ability in the past (something we were able to do, for example as a child). The negative is couldn't, and the question is Could + subject + base verb.

Olumsuzu couldn't, sorusu ise Could + özne + yalın fiil şeklindedir.

When?

We use it to talk about general abilities in nature in the past, like being able to climb, swim, or find the way.

  • She could swam very well as a child. She could swim very well as a child.

Use the base verb after could, not the past form.

TRCould'dan sonra fiilin yalın hali kullanılır.

Compare

Could genel bir yeteneği anlatır (I could swim when I was young). Belirli bir durumda tek seferlik bir başarıyı anlatmak için genellikle 'was/were able to' ya da 'managed to' tercih edilir (We were able to find shelter just in time).

C Your turn

Write three pieces of advice for someone going on a nature adventure. Use should and shouldn't.

Before you go, you should …You shouldn't …
Rule

Should is used to give advice or a recommendation — it does not express obligation. The negative, shouldn't, shows that something is not a good idea.

When?

We use it to give advice about nature trips and dangerous weather: what people should and shouldn't do.

3 · Form

Positive

  • You should take a compass.

A Weekend Camping Trip

Last month, my family and I went camping near Lake Abant. We packed our backpacks and drove to the campsite early on Saturday morning. When we arrived, we set up camp near a small forest, close to a clear river.

At sunrise on the first day, we were already awake and ready for a hike. We followed a long trail through the trees and saw a lot of wildlife, including deer and colourful birds. My little sister could name almost every bird we saw!

In the afternoon, we made a campfire and cooked simple food. While we were cooking, my dad told stories about his own camping trips when he was young. He said he could survive for days with just a small backpack and a compass.

At night, the sky was full of stars, and we couldn't hear any city noise at all — only the wind in the trees. We were sitting around the campfire when we suddenly heard an owl.

The next morning, before we left, we checked our tent for any damage and cleaned up the campsite. It was a simple weekend, but it taught me how much I love spending time in nature.

Caught in a Storm on Uludağ

Two years ago, Kaan and his cousin Derin went on a hiking adventure on Uludağ. They were walking along a narrow trail near a cliff when the weather suddenly changed.

Dark clouds appeared quickly, and soon they heard thunder in the distance. 'We should find shelter now,' said Kaan, looking at the sky nervously. They couldn't see the trail clearly because of the heavy rain.

While they were looking for shelter, they found a small cave near a waterfall. They quickly went inside and waited for the storm to pass. Lightning struck a tree close to the cave, and they were both frightened.

Kaan remembered his father's advice: 'You should always carry a compass and extra water on a hike, and you shouldn't panic in a storm.' He used his compass to check their direction while they waited.

After almost an hour, the storm finally stopped. They were cold and wet, but they were safe. They walked back to the campsite carefully, using the compass to find the right path.

Kaan says this adventure taught him an important lesson: nature can be beautiful, but you should always be prepared for extreme weather.
