They believed they were creating the world's greatest library. Seldom in history has a technology been so rapidly repurposed for ends its creators never imagined.

No sooner had social media platforms achieved global dominance than their capacity for industrial-scale disinformation became frighteningly apparent. Not only did they amplify false and inflammatory content, but their algorithms actively and measurably rewarded it with greater reach.

Rarely has a technology so fundamentally reshaped the epistemological landscape of public life in such a short period.
