Admittedly, the internet has delivered extraordinary benefits: democratised access to knowledge, unprecedented global communication, and tools for collaboration that earlier generations could not have imagined. Access to information has, arguably, never been greater in human history.
Yet worryingly, the very infrastructure of the modern web has been engineered to exploit our cognitive vulnerabilities. Notably, most major platforms generate revenue not from the quality of information they host, but from the volume of time users spend scrolling, clicking, and reacting. Paradoxically, the tools that were supposed to democratise information have arguably concentrated epistemic power in fewer hands than ever before.
Critics contend that this attention-extraction model is structurally incompatible with healthy democratic discourse. Others attribute the problem not to the platforms themselves but to the failure of regulatory frameworks to keep pace with technological change.
Strikingly, some of the engineers who built these systems now concede that they did not fully anticipate — or in some cases, did not adequately consider — the societal consequences of designing for engagement above all else. They posit that a different value architecture — optimising for wellbeing or accuracy rather than attention — is possible, but that market incentives currently make it unlikely.
Admittedly, identifying the problem is far easier than solving it. What is required, most researchers maintain, is not the destruction of digital platforms, but their fundamental reorientation.
