| # | Kelime / Kalıp | Türkçe açıklama |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | I'd rather + subject + Past Simple | Birinin bir şey yapmasını tercih etme — I'd rather you didn't... |
| 2 | It's high time + Past Simple | Artık zamanı gelmiş — gecikme var, yapılmalı |
| 3 | as if / as though + Past Simple | ...mış gibi — şimdiki gerçeğe aykırı benzetme |
| 4 | as if / as though + Past Perfect | ...mış gibi — geçmişteki gerçeğe aykırı benzetme |
| 5 | wish + would (annoyance) | Birinin alışkanlığına sinirlilik — I wish you would/wouldn't... |
| 6 | determinism | Determinizm — her şeyin önceki nedenlerden belirlenmesi |
| 7 | compatibilism | Uyumluculuk — özgür irade + determinizm birlikte |
| 8 | moral agency | Ahlaki eylem gücü — eylemlerinden sorumlu olabilmek |

Philosophers have been arguing about free will for millennia, yet the debate feels no closer to resolution. It is as though they had been walking in circles for centuries without noticing.
Hard determinists argue that every thought, decision, and action is the inevitable product of prior physical causes — genes, neural architecture, upbringing, circumstance. If this were true, it would be as though we had never genuinely chosen anything at all. We would be, in effect, extraordinarily complex physical systems — nothing more.
It's high time philosophy engaged more seriously with what neuroscience has revealed: that, in some experiments, brain activity can predict a simple decision several seconds — in a 2008 study, up to about ten seconds — before we become consciously aware of "making" it. The implications are profound — and deeply unsettling.
Compatibilists would rather we reframed the question entirely. They argue that even if determinism is true, we can still meaningfully speak of free will — not as freedom from causation, but as freedom from coercion and mental illness. I wish this were simpler. But as if to confirm the complexity, every apparent answer generates five new questions.
It's about time we acknowledged that these questions matter practically, not merely academically. Criminal justice systems operate as though individuals were fully autonomous agents capable of genuine choice. Sentencing decisions are made as if the concept of moral responsibility were philosophically unproblematic. I wish policymakers would engage with the philosophy more seriously. It would make for both better justice and better policy.
1What do hard determinists argue about decisions and actions?
2What have some neuroscience experiments shown about decision-making?
3How do compatibilists reframe the free will debate?
