Second Conditional: Imaginary Present and Future Situations

1 · Notice
  • If I ate a balanced diet, I would feel healthier.
  • She would sleep better if she didn't drink coffee at night.
  • If you had a headache, what would you do?
  • We wouldn't feel so stressed if we had more free time.

B Build sentences

Use the cues to write imaginary sentences about health and well-being. Look at the example first.

✓ If I ate healthier food, I would feel better.

  2. she drink more water not feel so tired
    Model answer

If she drank more water, she wouldn't feel so tired.

If I weren't so busy, I would sleep eight hours a night.

  6. ? / you catch a cold stay at home
    Model answer

If you caught a cold, would you stay at home?

C Your turn

Write three imaginary sentences about your own well-being using the second conditional. Think about diet, sleep, exercise or stress.

If I …, I would …I would feel better if …If I had more time, I …
Rule

We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future. The if-clause uses the past simple, and the main clause uses would + base verb.

If cümleciğinde geçmiş zaman (past simple), ana cümlede would + yalın fiil kullanılır.

When?

We use it to talk about situations that are not true now or are unlikely to happen, such as imagining healthier habits or different choices.

TRŞu anki gerçekliğe uymayan ya da gerçekleşme ihtimali düşük durumlar hakkında konuşurken (örn. sağlıklı alışkanlıklar, hayaller) kullanılır.

3 · Form

Positive

  • If I ate more vegetables, I would feel healthier.
  • She would sleep better if she exercised.

Negative

  • If I weren't so stressed, I would sleep better.
  • We wouldn't feel tired if we drank more water.

Question

  • What would you do if you caught a cold?
  • If you had more free time, would you exercise more?

Short answers

  • Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't.
Mistakes
  • If I would have more time, I would relax. If I had more time, I would relax.

Don't use 'would' in the if-clause; use the past simple.

TRIf cümleciğinde 'would' kullanılmaz, past simple kullanılır.

  • If she was tired, she will rest.If she was tired, she would rest.

Use 'would', not 'will', in the main clause.

TRAna cümlede 'will' değil 'would' kullanılır.

Compare

Second conditional (hayalî, gerçek olmayan: If I ate healthier, I would feel better.) ile first conditional (gerçek, olası: If I eat healthier, I will feel better.) karıştırılmamalı.

  • If only I had eaten breakfast this morning — now I feel weak.
  • If only we had more time to relax after school.
  • If only he would stop staying up so late.

Do these sentences talk about the present, the past, or both? What feeling do they express?

B Build sentences

Rewrite the situations using If only. Look at the example first.

  1. I have a headache. (now)

    ✓ If only I didn't have a headache!

  2. I didn't sleep enough last night. (past)
    Model answer

If only I had slept enough last night!

  3. We don't have enough free time. (now)
    Model answer

If only we had more free time!

  4. I ate junk food before the match. (past)
    Model answer

If only I hadn't eaten junk food before the match!

  5. He is always so stressed. (now)
    Model answer

If only he weren't so stressed!

C Your turn

Write two If only sentences: one about something you wish were different now, and one about something you regret from the past.

If only I …If only I had …
Rule

If only expresses a stronger wish or regret than 'I wish'. We use If only + past simple for a present situation we want to change, and If only + past perfect (had + past participle) for a past regret.

TRIf only, 'I wish'den daha güçlü bir pişmanlık ya da dilek ifade eder. Şimdiki bir durumdan memnun değilsek If only + past simple; geçmişte olan bir şeyden pişmansak If only + past perfect (had + V3) kullanılır.

When?

We use it when we regret a present situation or something we did or didn't do in the past, for example about our health habits.

3 · Form

Positive

  • If only I had more energy today.
  • If only I had gone to bed earlier last night.

Negative

  • If only I didn't feel so tired.
  • If only I hadn't eaten so much junk food.
Mistakes
  • If only I have more time.If only I had more time.

Use the past simple after 'if only' for a present wish, not the present simple.

  • If only I ate breakfast this morning. (dün sabah pişmanlık)If only I had eaten breakfast this morning.

Use the past perfect (had + past participle) for a past regret.

Compare

'I wish' ve 'If only' benzer anlamlıdır ama 'If only' daha güçlü, daha duygusal bir pişmanlık/dilek anlatır: 'I wish I had more time' (nötr) vs 'If only I had more time!' (güçlü pişmanlık).

Wish + Past Simple (was/were): Wishing Things Were Different

1 · Notice
  • I wish I were less stressed about exams.
  • She wishes she had more energy in the mornings.
  • We wish we didn't have so much homework.
  • Do you ever wish you were better at managing your time?

Are these situations true now, or imaginary? Which verb form comes after 'wish'?

2 · Discover

    Model answer

He wishes he were better at managing his time.

  5. I don't sleep eight hours a night.
    Model answer

I wish I slept eight hours a night.

C Your turn

Write two sentences about your own life with I wish, about something you would like to be different (energy, stress, habits, time).

I wish I …I wish I had …
Rule

Wish + past simple expresses a wish about a present situation that is not true. With I/he/she/it, 'were' is considered more correct ('was' is also common in everyday speech).

I/he/she/it ile 'were' kullanılması daha doğru kabul edilir ('was' da günlük konuşmada kullanılabilir).

When?

We use it when we are not happy with a present situation and wish it were different, for example about energy, stress, or habits.

3 · Form

Positive

  • I wish I were calmer before exams.
  • She wishes she had more free time.

Negative

  • We wish we didn't have so much stress.
  • He wishes he didn't work so late.

Question

  • Do you ever wish you were less busy?

Short answers

  • Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
Mistakes
  • I wish I am less stressed.I wish I were less stressed.

Use the past simple after 'wish', not the present simple.

  • She wish she has more time. She wishes she had more time.

Use 'wishes' with third person, and the past simple ('had').

TRÜçüncü tekil şahısta 'wishes' ve past simple ('had') kullanılır.

Compare

'Wish' ve 'if only' benzerdir; 'if only' daha güçlü bir duygu anlatır. Ayrıca 'I wish' + past simple şu anki durum için, 'I wish' + past perfect (had + V3) geçmişteki pişmanlık için kullanılır.

C Your turn

Write three sentences about your own well-being using -ing and -ed adjectives (e.g. tired/tiring, stressed/stressing, relaxed/relaxing).

I feel … when …… is/was really …
Rule

Adjectives ending in -ing (interesting, exhausting, relaxing) describe what a thing or situation is like; adjectives ending in -ed (interested, exhausted, relaxed) describe how a person feels.

When?

We use these when talking about health, stress and well-being, to describe both situations and feelings.

3 · Form

Positive

  • The lesson was interesting.
  • I felt exhausted after the match.

Negative

  • The results weren't worrying.
  • I wasn't interested in the topic.

Question

  • Was the yoga class relaxing?

1 Before reading

  • Look at the title. What do you think happens in this text?
  • Guess: what are two common symptoms of the flu?

The Day I Caught the Flu

Last Monday, I woke up with a headache and a sore throat. I knew something wasn't right, so I told my mum I felt terrible. "If only I hadn't stayed up so late last week," I thought — maybe I wouldn't have caught a cold so easily.

My mum took my temperature and said I had a fever. She called the school and then took me to see Dr. Kaya, our family doctor. In the waiting room, I saw a nurse checking another patient's blood pressure.

Dr. Kaya listened to my symptoms and said, "You have the flu. If you rested and drank plenty of water, you would recover faster." She gave me some treatment and told me to stay in bed for a few days.

I wish I had taken better care of myself before I got sick — eating more vegetables and sleeping enough hours. Now I understand why it is so important to prevent illness, not just treat it.

After four days of rest, I finally felt better. The whole experience was exhausting, but it also taught me a useful lesson about listening to my body and looking after my well-being.

  • Guess: what are two small habits that can improve well-being?

Small Habits, Big Changes

For our end-of-theme project, our class decided to create a Well-Being Challenge for the whole school. We wanted to show that small habits can make a big difference to how people feel.

First, we researched simple changes: drinking more water, walking for ten minutes after lessons, and going to bed at the same time every night. If more students tried these habits, they would probably feel less tired and stressed.

We also learned about mindfulness — taking a few quiet minutes to breathe and relax. One student said, "I wish I had discovered mindfulness earlier — it really helps me cope with stress before exams."

For the future, our group decided to set a goal: to build one new healthy habit every month. We know it takes time, but a sustainable lifestyle doesn't happen overnight.

In the end, we designed a short show about health and well-being, with characters like a doctor, a nurse and a patient, to present our ideas to the school in a fun and memorable way.

  1. Choose your characters and where the scene happens (e.g. the school health room, a doctor's office).
  2. Decide what the problem is (e.g. a symptom, a piece of advice, a wish for better habits).
  3. Write 6-8 lines of dialogue.
  4. Read it aloud with a partner and time it — it should take about 30 seconds.
