Normal koşul cümlelerinde iki taraf aynı zamandan bahseder. Karışık (mixed) koşulda ise if tarafı ile sonuç tarafı farklı zamanlardadır: geçmişteki bir olayın şimdiki sonucu, ya da şu an doğru olan bir durumun geçmişteki sonucu. Resmi yazıda if atılıp Had / Were / Should başa alınabilir.
| Yapı / Kural | Form | Anlam | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed: Past IF → Present Result | If + had + V3, would + V1 (now) | Geçmişteki farklı eylem → Şimdiki farklı durum | If we had invested in clean energy in the 1970s, we wouldn't be facing a climate emergency now. |
| Mixed: Present IF → Past Result | If + Past Simple, would have + V3 | Şimdiki farklı durum → Geçmişteki farklı sonuç | If she were more careful (now), she wouldn't have made that mistake (yesterday). |
| Formal 3rd (no if) | Had + subject + V3 + ... + would have + V3 | 'Had' = 'If had' — inversion without 'if' | Had they acted sooner, the outcome would have been very different. |
| Were + subject + to | Were + subject + to + V1 = formal if + subject + V1 | Düşük ihtimalli formal koşul | Were AI to achieve general intelligence, the implications would be profound. |
If we had taken climate warnings seriously in the 1970s, we would not be facing the emergency we face today. That is a textbook mixed conditional: a past failure with a present consequence.
Had governments acted on the scientific consensus of the 1990s, the trajectory of warming would have been radically different. That is a pure third conditional — a past imaginary.
Were artificial intelligence to achieve general human-level intelligence this century, the implications would be among the most profound in human history. We cannot yet know if this will happen — but we can prepare.
Had humanity invested as heavily in pandemic preparedness as in military technology, COVID-19 might have claimed far fewer lives. This is another past conditional — a tragic one.
The question is not only what we should have done. It is what we will choose to do now. If we were to take seriously the existential risks we face — climate change, biodiversity loss, AI safety, pandemic risk — our priorities as a civilisation would look very different from today's.
The future is not predetermined. But every day that passes without adequate action makes the best outcomes less achievable — and the worst, more likely. Had we understood this earlier — would we have acted? Perhaps. The more pressing question: now that we understand it — will we?
