In 2022, an image created with the AI program Midjourney — Théâtre D'opéra Spatial by Jason M. Allen — won first prize in the digital arts category of the Colorado State Fair's art competition. Consequently, questions about creativity, authorship, and the nature of art intensified dramatically.

AI can produce visually stunning images in seconds. Nevertheless, many artists and philosophers argue that it fundamentally lacks the human intention, lived experience, and emotional depth that define genuine artistic expression. Furthermore, the economic impact on working artists is significant: their styles, training data, and creative output are used without consent or compensation.

In contrast, defenders of AI art point out that tools have always transformed art. The camera, when it first appeared, was dismissed as a threat to painting. Whereas earlier critics predicted it would destroy art, the camera actually liberated painting from the obligation of pure representation, giving rise to Impressionism and beyond.

Despite this historical precedent, the current situation feels qualitatively different in scale and speed. Whereas a photographer still makes countless deliberate choices — lighting, angle, timing, framing — an AI produces outputs based on statistical patterns in training data. Admittedly, the boundary between human creativity and pattern recognition is blurring.

To a certain extent, it could be argued that all art involves absorbing and recombining patterns learned from others. Nevertheless, the question of whether a machine can truly be said to create — rather than merely generate — remains genuinely open.
