It has long been established that human decision-making is not purely rational. Evidence suggests that we are influenced by cognitive biases that operate largely below the level of conscious awareness — systematic errors in thinking that appear to be hardwired into human cognition.
It appears that the way a choice is framed — rather than its objective content — can significantly alter our decision. People tend to respond differently to "a 90% survival rate" than to "a 10% mortality rate," even though these are logically identical. This phenomenon, known as the framing effect, was described by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman in 1981 and has been replicated in many studies since.
It is possible that evolutionary pressures have embedded certain irrational tendencies into our cognitive architecture. Loss aversion — the tendency to weigh losses more heavily than equivalent gains — may be among the most powerful and well-documented of these biases.
It could be argued that simply knowing about our biases might help us make better decisions. However, there is some evidence that awareness alone is rarely sufficient. Presumably, breaking deeply ingrained cognitive habits requires deliberate practice over time.
To a certain extent, these findings challenge the classical economic assumption of the "rational actor." It remains unclear whether better institutional design could compensate for individual cognitive limitations — a question that continues to occupy researchers across psychology, economics, and neuroscience.
